Recently one of my Preamp tubes are in need of a change.

So with that in mind I wish to move to a touch cleaner cleans and currently all 4 of my preamp tubes are 12AX7's.

I've heard people say that if you want a cleaner sound put 1 12AU7 in your first preamp tube socket and then leave the rest 12AX7's.

Is that true?

Also would just buying a new 12AX7 solve the slight dist problem from the old blown tube?

My amp is a 1966 Fender Black Face Bandmaster all tube.

I want to keep the same character of the sound I got but with more headroom before break up. I do like the sound of the tubes breaking up on the real high end of hitting the strings hard but I would like to have a bit more headroom before that happens.

Here's my clean tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGcPR4wD1s

As you can tell the clean is a bit distorted possibly due to one of the pre amps going out?

1 out of the 4 preamp tubes has a microphonic sound when I tap on it. The rest apear to be good.

Here's my Dirty Sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfVHaUATiL0

I love the way it screams on the dirty tone I just hope adding a 12AU7 to the loop won't affect the sound much. The blown tube isn't as noticable on the dirty sound and actually I think it sounds pretty cool. I'm using a Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal,Boss GE-7 EQ and a RV-3 Reverb Pedal.

Guitar is a Jay Turser Les Paul Copy with Seymore Duncan Alnico 2 pro's.

Let me know what you think!

I would take this to GG&A. They REALLY know what they're talking about over there.
