In that price range, Squiers are good, Ibanez (Look at an SR300), and Schecter are ones I'd look at. Brands I'd avoid are Dean and Epiphone.

Or of course, my favorite method, go to a music store, play some in your price range, see what sounds and feels good.
Schecter Hellraiser V1 / Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4 / Gallien Krueger 400RB / Hartke Transporter 4x10 / Digitech BP200 / Pod Studio GX

you might be hesitant to upgrade from a squier to another squier. but the VMJ really is a very solid instrument. i would definitely say that a jazz of some sort would suit your style(s) very well. my suggestion would be to try out the VMJ and a fender standard, and see which one makes more sense for how much money you want to spend.

Mark Hoppus bass uses tone knob!
it's super unneffective!
