M-Audio fast track pro has the best price : reputation ratio.

You'll also want some nice powered monitor speakers, an SM57, and something better than audacity.

Damn. Thats one hell of a budget for friends and family

If you like the tone out of your current amp, I'd pick up an SM57 first, and pretty much any high end sound card will do

I've heard good things about the mboxes, but I dont know much more than that..

Honestly, I'd think about spending maybe $200 on an mic and interface, and get a nice 400-500 amp.

When you hook up your audio interface (that M-Audio Fast Track Pro), it overrides your current sound card in order to record and play back your tracks. I personally have a cheap set of Logitech speakers for my regular soundcard, and right next to them I have those M-Audio AV40s hooked up to my audio interface, which I use as reference speakers, for practice...

In essence, unless you plan to listen through headphones until you export your song as a WAV, you will need a seperate set of speakers to use with your audio interface.

This is with MY audio interface, it may be different with others.

Thats cool, I didn't know they do. I'm not sure what other amps do.
