Alright I have decided on a carvin X100B, which comes in the model with EL34s or the model with 6L6s. which should i get?

before answering consider the following:

-I play modern hard rock

-I love to use the clean channel also

-I play a gibson les paul studio 1991

-I use DR Tite Fit strings

-Most of what I play is in a dropped tuning, mostly drop D or B

thanks for posting.

6L6s would be better for you, el34s have a bit of a flub in the low end.

Hmm.

From my experience, 6L6 tubes distort quite...smoothly, but later than EL84s

I find EL84s have more crunch, Ideal for classic rock.

I may be totally off, but that's what my ear has picked up. If someone can correct / argue with me, please do.

Seriously?

Damn, I thought the difference was a lot more complicated than that

I'd say 6l6's for what you're doing, although personally I prefer EL84s and El34s.

There are also some reliability issues with the EL34. The best ones are NOS, but they're pretty expensive. NOS refers to New/Old Stock. These are tubes that were made several years ago, but have never been used.

6L6 for your style, Pete from Chevelle uses a Mesa Mark IV which has 6L6s, and Adam from Tool uses Diezel's VH4 with (most likely) 6L6 and on earlier albums he used a Mesa Dual Recto which has 6L6s.

Or would have, if there was any mention of EL84s in the thread

The EL84 is considered the little brother of the EL34. Like going 6v6 instead of 6l6 because you like your hearing. And EL84 was mentioned but was probably just a typo.

Your preamp will have a much bigger impact on your amps tone.
6L6's will sound rounder with more headroom, while EL34's will sound sharper with an earlier breakup.
Players rarely push their poweramps hard enough to even hear the differences between output tubes.

6L6's are going to give you a better clean sound with more warmth, and some better low end to your sound. I prefer 6L6's, personally.

6L6s will probably be what you want, but I myself prefer EL-34s.

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.
