My cab is rather noisey, and I dont think its helping my sound. Its a crate cab, GT1200 I think. So I figure I'll either replace the speakers, or get a new cab. I'm not sure about budget, but I'd like to keep it under $400ish. Mainly pop punk, old school punk (sex pistols, ramones, ect), some indie, ect. It'll be going thru my EVJ, if that matters.

In any response please try to give recomendations of either speakers or cabs.

Thanks GG&A

What makes you so sure it's the cab? Have you played the amp through a different one?

As for speakers, searchbar "The Ultimate Speaker Thread", it'll give you a good idea as to what you want. For cabinets, see Lopoline, Avatar and Vader (may be too expensive though)

Id save a little more and buy a new cab.
Sure you could replace the speakers, but then theres still the fact that the cab
you put them in is made out of low quality wood, or it isn't projected very well,
or it isn't sealed properly, all tone killing aspects.
If you go for a new cab (orange, avatar, vader, etc.) and you'll get great speakers,
AND high quality cabinet.
Plus you save the energy, time, and cost of actually installing the speakers.
You could get a 2x12 avatar cab for about 400, and that'd be a REALLY good cab.
An Orange 2x12 for about 500-550 and it'd be REAAALLY good.
Or a Vader 2x12 for 400 and again, it'd be really good.

But those are just a few suggestions, theres a few other good cab making companies.

A few questions bout 2x12's
a) How loud will they be? can they jam with a band thru an EVJ?
b) Which orange models do you think would work best for the price range?

2x12's are pretty much exactly as loud as a 4x12.
theres only a difference of a couple decibels, which is almost unaudible.
They just don't spread the sound as far/hard, which doesn't matter
at all in a small band practice room, and live you'll be mic'ing the cab either way.
So DEFINITELY they're more than loud enough to jam with a band.
Whats an EVJ though? What brand?
Regardless, if its SS then you'll be more than loud enough,
if its tube you'll only need to turn to about 6-7 at MAX with earplugs in.

Uhm, Orange only makes one type of cab.
I dunno, Orange might end up being out of your price range.
You can find the cab for about 450-500 for open back, or around 600-650
for closed back (more bassy response)

Check out these cabs.
The Traditional style are the cheapest (only by a bit though, so check out
all three styles)
Save up a little bit more and you'll be able to buy a 412 avatar cab.

Oh.. 5 watts?
Yeah, if you max the volume on it you might be heard in a band practice..
If I were you I'd focus that money towards a better head.
Sell that head used and you could make a bit more money towards a new head.

you could get a Peavey Valveking for $550
A Tiny Terror would be really great.
Theres a few other good heads for around that price,
but I couldn't recommend any off the top of my head.
You're gonna need ATLEAAAST 15+ watts to be nicely heard.
