All those are wrong. The only song a bassist should know is the Improvisation Song.

this.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

^ Ya, but there are a few that make things convenient because they are played a lot (Another Brick in the Wall, Under Pressure), or because they have a lot of street cred (Hysteria, Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)). Hysteria is especially good because it's really famous and not actually that hard.

in a jazz circuit, Hysteria will no doubt interest none of the diehards.

I think everyone should know Portrait of Tracy. Bass was founded on jazz mostly, so I believe that if you want to learn bass, start with jazz. I started with jazz, went into funk, then R&B. I play more jazz than anything, and in the metal bands, pop bands, 80's bands or whatever bands I've been in, I still play jazz most of the time and it always fits.

So, any Jazz song really.

True. Currently, I'm on the school events circuit, so impressing people who don't really know jack s*** about music is kind of important.

I plugged this song for ages way back when, and no-one picked up on it People may not know the song name, but they sure as hell will know the bassline.

Same with Free's All Right Now (Fantastic practice for string skips with large gaps- check out the tab during the interlude).

And Tom Jones' You Can Leave Your Hat On.
