"THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant."

* Police can snoop in your computer in various ways, such as by installing a keylogger, sending you viruses, and other methods.

* The police themselves will decide whether or not such snooping is justified. No need for a warrant.

* Other countries will be able to request such snooping, and British Police will then spy on you for them.

Apparently, hacking is illegal until the police decide to do it.

Thoughts?

The British police are far too stupid to be able to hack anyone's computer as well you know.

But really, how often will they do it?
There hath he lain for ages and will lie,
Battening on huge seaworms in his sleep;
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Seeing as that's in breach of EU law, even if the EU cops have given the green light, that will come to light.

I seriously do not believe they are allowed to do this. There has to be some kind of law against it? If it is true, I ll protest it. Its not right for the government to snoop like that.

The sane goes here in Austria, few weeks ago the goverment inform their intentions to hack into peoples PCs with spyware and other hack tools. Also, it is say that as far as you keep a good firewall (not the Windows one) or even better not use Windows at all, you'll not be affected for this.

It pretty much always has been, the 1990 computer misuse act was amended a while ago I think.

Either way; if the hackers out there in cyberspace can't get to my computer what makes the police think they can?

Either way, this is only a worry if you have something to hide; I have no such things.

If the individual citizen doesn't do anything to warrant a search, then the police won't just pick you at random to go through your files.

I'm pretty sure they'll only use this for individuals they suspect of crimes. It's not like they'll snoop on everyone just because they can.
I've decided that my signature is terrible. I'm open to suggestions.

In the article it basically says that the police have the right to search you if they think you intend to do an illegal act in the future.

In other words, you're being searched for something you might have done in the future.

Happy 1984.

Of course they won't, most people have nothing to fear, but it's the fact that they are allowed to do so without any proper control (so far) that is scary.

'Cause they're the rozzers. It's not like they're gonna do it randomly and just throw people in prison for a good ole bit of dwarf CP. They can speed on the roads in certain situations, I don't think this is entirely different.

Bahahaha just reading comments on the original site.

mean if the police want to try to break in to my network they can try but "black hats" (a term to describe illegal hackers) have been trying to penetrate my network for ages but none have got past my second layer of security.

Also, this makes me FURIOUS. They need a warrant to search your home, why don't they need one for your computer?

Only they're not; the police have loopholes and amendments built into the laws that theoretically allow them to fight crime more effectively.

Erm, that's different. The only way they speed down the road is because whenever a siren is heard everyone pulls over, hence little to no obstructions. On the motorway they speed down the hard shoulder.

I'm sure child porn, dwarf or not, is illegal.

And to the guy who pointed out that this should require a warrant, because they need one to search our houses, you're right
