hey everyone.
im going to a german bar/pub whatever tomorrow with a friend of mine. we are there to see a band that he really likes. We are going to also eat dinner and im sure i will have a couple beers. Im hoping that their are some german people online right now, or someone who is familiar with all things german to help steer me in the right direction.

what do you suggest i order to drink? (im actually quite the drinker of world beers and microbrewery, so dont be afraid to recommend a heavy or dark beer. i have never had the pleasure to enjoy a german beer though, i have heard of a Dopplebock?)

and, what do you suggest i order to eat? I dont want to end up ordering Bratwurst, as that is too cliche and i want to try something new.

thanks for the help.

If it's a good sized place, they should have a decent-sized selection of German beer. I've had many different German beers and loved them all. Your waitress/bartender should be more than happy to steer you in the right direction.

Love German food too. My favorite is Saurbraten (marinated roast beef) with spaetzel (German noodles).

Beer company i think. Bratwurst is really tasty, we have a german bar here. Also you could try shnitzel (i don't know how to spell it but its good)

ps...wow you have an ES175 cool....Steve Howe style!

im really excited about the beer. now that im actually old enough to drink im sick of nasty ass run of the mill american beers, and am always trying new beers and loving it.

To eat: Schweinshachse or Currywurst mit Pommes
To Drink: Not sure if you like Weißbier (eg Erdinger), but give that a try...not everyones thing...I prefer Pils(eg Warsteiner) or Helles(Paulaner)

wiener schnitzel (essentially breaded pork loin with cheese) is always amazing.

if you can find some weißen beer, I would recommend that you get it. It's quite common in Germany, but I haven't seen it in the US. As far as other beers, it's just really hard to go wrong with a German beer.
#24
Just say beer, the Germans will hook you up.

You're from Ohio, so I'm doubting your beer-drinking skills compared to the Germans, are you actually in Germany or just a styled-pub in Ohio? If that's the case you'll have more American water ("beer") available

spaetzel indeed.
i worked as a bartender in germany for 6 months and what i recommend is:

bottled beer:
Erdinger weizenbier (`hell` is lager beer and `dunkel` is dark beer), its very tasty and creamy.

draught beer:
Altbier is also dark beer, with a rly strong taste.

Kolsch is a lager beer with a mild taste. try `Sion`

Pils is the most common draught beer, for everyday use lol. try `Warsteiner`.

food: try Linsensuppe
#26
It's "Spätzle", not spaetzel!

and for beer, Becks, Holsten, or Warsteiner, they're awesome.

as for food, schnitzel, any kind of *wurst (except Weißwurst, stay away from that crap).
Sauerkraut is good, try Grünkohl and Kasseler (meat)

and for the love of god, stop bumping your thread after every post.

Order a schnitzel. Thats all those damn germanspeaking countries eat. And you get a pice of meat large enough too feed an african country.

lol, but they do eat enough to feed an entire african country.

btw, I don't really like german food. If you are in germany, try to eat some turkish instead.

where in germany do you go
everywhere is different beer
in cologne is Kölsch common ( Früh,Reissdorf)
in the north and east is Pils common (Becks, Wicküler Pils, Bitburger)
in the south Weizen is common (Paulaner)

You are not able to order all beer in the pubs(depends on the pub)

food: like someone said try schweinshachse or schnitzel or spätzle

an anegdote:
when i first came to germany i heard someone say `leck mich im arsch` and i googled it the other day and wiki said its a german greeting, the first thing you say when you see someone.
and also a masterpiece by wolfgang amadeus mozart.

i could have misused it. will never trust wiki agn.
