My band has a show coming up and we decided that we want to add a Slayer cover to the setlist. We've yet to decide on which one though, so I'm looking for suggestions.

There are plenty of Slayer songs that I already know how to play, however I've never actually taken the time to learn any of the solos. I've dabbled with lead work in the past, but haven't really focused on it all that seriously until recently. That being said, I'd say I'm a competent lead player, but nothing amazing (yet :p ). So, seeing as our show is in less than 3 weeks I'm looking for a Slayer song with relatively easy solos. Not anything overly simple mind you, but given the timeframe something that would be quick to learn and easy to play around with.

The songs that we have thought about are as follows:

Season of the Abyss
Dead Skin Mask
Disciple
Payback
Cult
Hell Awaits
Black Magic

Any of these fit the bill? Any other suggestions or recommendations?

Payback. Not for the solo, but just because Tom Araya screams "Payback Motherf***er!"

How To: Slayer Solos

Step 1: Chromatic scale.

Step 2: Grab trem bar and jack off.

Step 3: Headbang like a robot.

Most of the slayer solos do sound like that yeh but check out the solos from seasons in the abyss album, their quite good, they actually used scales to compose them omagawd.

Raining Blood would probably get you the best response, because it kicks ass and everyone's heard it.

No Angel of Death?

Hehe, no. I'd like to, but we're playing with a Thrash band that night that will likely be covering it. We wouldn't want to show them up now. So it would be best if we picked something else.

Yes, Raining Blood is a sweet song. But the fact that eveyone and their Grandmother plays it is why we have chosen not to go with that one. We want to play something different.

Dude...Slayer solos, just hit random notes and use your trem. But do it fast

That's pretty much what KK does...

Haha! Yeah yeah. Slayer solos are just noise blah blah blah. While I do somewhat agree, there is still a method to the madness. I'd like to stick as close to that method as possible lest the madness consume me (and get me booed off stage).

Every Slayer solo I've heard sounds like two turkeys having an argument...

Just learn the chromatic scales and hammer the crap out of them for several minutes, I very much doubt anyone would realise it wasn't a note-for-note rendition.

Hehe, coincidentally enough those 2 were just added to the list of potentials yesterday. I'm thinking War Ensemble would be a really good choice actually.
