So, I'm going straight ino my line-in jack on my (crappy onboard) soundcard using a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter. I realise this sounds alot worse than using a pre-amp but I can't afford one at the minute. how much better would it sound using a decent soundcard? I've got an audigy soundblaster 2 ZS soundcard but haven't bothered fitting it yet, will it improve the sound at all? Thanks.

I have done this, too. It might sound better if you use a pedal before - like a multi-effects or something? I'd try that... I don't know much about soundcards, though... Sorry!

Don't upgrade your sound card. Get a preamp.
Fender '72 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue -> Korg Pitchblack Tuner -> Boss PS-5 -> EHX Big Muff -> MXR EVH Phase 90 -> Menatone Pleasure Trem 5000 -> Line 6 Verbzilla -> MXR Carbon Copy -> Boss RC-2 -> Peavey Classic 50

I already have the soundcard. It just isn't installed as it would involve me formatting my PC. I can't afford a preamp right now, this is a temporary solution. Just wondering if the quality would be better.

Don't upgrade your sound card. Get an audio interface.

Fixed

Dont expect much more on the SB card. They are all stock and none are made to record. Most wont even work with plugging a guitar directly into them...

Alright, maybe I'll leave it for the time being. Thanks for the help.
