hello;

Hey, I'm looking for a good guitar to play some metal.
i only play trash metal ala Metallica and Slayer if that matters....
My budget is about €1700

I would be very pleased if you could help me
my gear:

guitar: Schecter c1 classic
amp: Engl fireball
box: Engl v30 4x12
effects: g-major
in future: ESP eclipse, PRS Custom 24...

anything can play metal, if you have the right pickups, trivium played gibsons and deans, slipknot use a fender telecaster and ibanez, but they all use either EMG or seymore duncan humbucker pickups
Epiphone SG G-400 faded
Fender Strat
Fender Frontman amp
**Dream Guitar**
Fender telecaster '58 heavy relic in blonde

"its in the key of D minor, i find songs in this key makes people want to weep."
"its called Lick My Love Pump"

I highly recommend Jackson USA guitars. About the best metal guitars in that price range imo. You can buy them new for about 1700€ if you shop in the UK (thanks to the low GBP), or you can look for them second hand.
Other brands that are good for metal too: ESP, Carvin, Vigier, Caparison, ...

Then we need more info. What specs do you want? 24 or 22 frets? Ebony/maple/Rosewood fretboard? Body wood? Fret size? Tremolo? HH or HSS configuration? Active or passive pickups?

You could get a high end ESP for that much money and it would be basically perfect for that style with the whole 24 frets and active pups with an OFR trem.

ESP horizon or M-II if you want a tremolo

ESP eclipse is a damn fine guitar, the slim neck has to suit your playing style you either hate or love it. dunno about the other ESP necks.

or if you're a great metallica fan, kirk hammet or james hetfield signature ESP :d
Main gear
  • ESP Eclipse II Standard (BK Cold Sweat)
  • ESP Horizon NT-II Standard (SD '59/JB)
  • Marshall JVM 410 Combo

what about some kind of Schecter?

the Hellraiser or the Blackjack ATX is built for metal, and they not even that expensive, so maybe you could buy two?

Ibanez RG2228 Prestige
Schecter C7 Jeff Loomis FR (18volt mod)
Epiphone Gothic Explorer (with SD Blackouts)
Ibanez RG350M Yellow
Peavey C5 Tigerwood 5string bass

Definatly KV2 then. Dont get me wrong, the ESP is a great guitar, but the KV2 has the following advantages:
- lighter
- better fret access
- Jackson USA necks are heaven (personal opinion, but shared with many people)
- USA made
- Built quality is SLIGHTLY better imo, but i say this because i personally never seen a flaw on a USA built Jackson (played 7) and i did see some on the ESP's i played (2 horizons and 3 Eclipses). Like all brands both of these shouldnt have flaws, but there are always bad apples. Even with Jackson USA. Must be that i got lucky each time i played one.
Here is a youtube video of a person that owns both the KV2 and a high end ESP. His Jackson seems to have flaws, but so does the ESP. Watch it, because its a good comparison video.

He can do tons better than that. Better one good guitar then two mediocre ones.

There are probably people who prefer an Eclipse. Its a personal issue. Tastes differ. You should try them both befor you buy.

First of all: he is about to spend 1700€, not 600. So dont give us biased opinions on mediocre guitars.
Second of all: you like JEM's. Nuf said.

That was me. And yes the Horus is a superb guitar.

But i'd still take the Jackson.

i like JEM's, and theres a possibility that the same series neck may be used on the more expensive models, as most guitar companys do....

Well, no. Guitar companies that do this (like ibanez) are ripping you off.
The Jackson USA's are the only ones that have a quartersawn maple neckthru.
The Pro series neckthru guitars have not quartersawn one with a scarf joint headstock.
The other pro's are bolt on.
Also the necks on the USA Jacksons are handcrafted, and on the pro series they arent.

PRS are good guitars, and they can handle metal, but they are seriously overpriced. The second hand prices are what they actually should cost new.
