Ive got a crate V33 and want a distortion pedal that will give me high gain, but not sound exactly like the BH & metal Muff

Noble Gas Muff?

Seriously though, check out a Hardwire TL-2 or even an overdrive might be able to push your amp into metal territory.

The opposite of a Metal Muff is in fact, NO Metal Muff
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.
Probably picked "for teh lulz"

Why don't you like the MM? I found it to be one of the most versatile metal distortions I've played. You should try experimenting with it more if you don't like it.

I dont want our sounds running together, I'm trying to keep my tone distinct from his

acdcrocks Edit: i cant find the rat, just the rat 2 and turbo rat

I would assume he wants a different metal sound than the other guitarist so they both stand out.

I would look at a Pro Co Rat. Great thrash tone in that baby.

+1

I know for a fact that James Hetfield used a Rat on Kill 'Em All (I'm not sure if he used it on any albums past that), but that album has a nice high gain, thrashy tone.

so the standard rat's no longer in production?
and is the 2 better than the Turbo for early metallica to pantera level distortion?

I'm hesitant about the dime distortion, since I dont have much experience w/ MXR
and im hesitant to buy something with dimes face plastered all over it
I mean he was a good guitarist, But whoever was merchandising for him was the real genius

What you can do is just turn your amp up really loud. Works for me

So is it pretty much the consensus that the rat(2)
will have a vastly different voicing than the metal muff
with a similar level of gain?
I saw the Digitech hardwire metal pedal, anyone have experience with it?
Ill probably try the dime distortion too
anything else in the roughly $100 range i should try?

edit: Ive done it, It doesnt really get heavy enough

Depends on what you mean by heavy. It's plenty heavy for the kind of metal I play.

I know how heavy it gets, We have the same amp, And the gains not doin it for me, by the time I get close its so loud my ears are ringing

Like I said, it depends on what you mean by heavy :stickpoke:

And loud enough to ring teh ears=the point.

Just use your amps distortion, one guitar with heavy distortion on and another with light distortion will give you a nice full sound, and you can add some definition and tightness to the riffs with a cleaner sound.

A Rat 2 is not a Rat.

If you want a high-gain distortion that sounds decent on the cheap that isn't a Metal Muff, a heavily modded DS-1 is probably the best option (several sites offer DIY kits). The Keeley DS-1 is pretty popular, but pricey relative to less famous modders. It's the same price as an MI Audio Crunch Box, which might also be what you're looking for.

If you like your amp's distortion, but need just an extra punch of gain, then most of the cheaper overdrives hold their own pretty well.
With that you've got a few options:
Hardwire CM-2
Ibanez TS-9
Boss BD-2
Please don't assume I care enough about your guitar rig, your general thoughts on life, the funny things people have said about you, or anything else not related to the topic at hand to have the view signatures option turned on. I don't.

I went from a Metal Muff to a Uber Metal and prefered it over the MM actually.. Its a great pedal..

uber metal is pretty ****in cool actually.

I use both metal muff AND unber metal as my 2 "heavy" sounds (through the clean channel of a valveking) and they both sound fab.

the muff is warmer, the uber metal is harsher/heavier/more scooped

im very pleased with both pedals :-)
