I just recently bought a Seagull Coastline S12 12 string guitar. While all the strings in the other courses are the same distance apart, I noticed that the strings in the high E course are much closer to each other than the others, but only near the bridge. The notches in the nut are the same width as the other courses, but they converge as they get closer to the bridge. It really doesn't affect the sound or the playability, but it just seems odd to me.

This is my first 12 string, so is this a common thing done to 12 strings? Is this a common thing done to Seagull 12 strings? Is this something that I would be able to fix the next time I change strings? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It happens. It's because they didn't use proportional spacing. Proportional spacing takes into account the differing string width. Instead, they used equal string spacing. because of this, it seems closer. Here's what Stewart Macdonald says about it (using their string spacing rule):
12-string spacing
For 12-string guitars, builder Todd Sams marks his spacing on an index card, then transfers the marks to the nut:

Measure the width of the nut and mark it on an index card. Mark the positions of the two outermost strings on the card.

Lay out the first course of 6 strings, starting from the low E.

Slide the rule 7/64" to mark the second E, A, D and G strings. For the B and E strings, he works from the high E, sliding the rule 5/64" for the second course. (Sometimes he'll use a little more than 5/64" for the B and E, if that’s what the player prefers.)

Transfer the marks to the nut, positioning the set of 12 slots comfortably.
Sincerely, Chad.

Yea the nut has the correct spacing, they get closer towards the saddle. If I just loosen one of E strings and slide it further along the saddle, will that work?

Yeah, it should. Sorry, I'm on vacation in Florida, so I'm spending every day tanked out of my mind. I'm guessing the saddle is TUSQ (since it's a Seagull), so there is probably an imprint of where the string was. Just slide it over, using that as a gauge of where it was.

I've created a new drink. Gin and cranberry juice. The Crantini.

Good to be back, Captivate. I'll be on more once I get home. After going a while without my computer (sold it and a few cigar box guitars for spare cash to fix up my car), I'm back online and ready to go.

All I can say is to keep playing scratch-off tickets. Won $1000 to put toward a new iMac (needed for my film major).
Sincerely, Chad.
