Anyone have any suggestions? I was hoping to get the actual guitar for under $150 off ebay, I don't care if it has scratches, shi t paint jobs, bad pickups, etc. I would like one that has the body style of an Ibanez RG series.

I plan not to replace the bridge, but will probably repaint it and put in different pickups and tuners, assuming the ones it comes with are going to be sub-par.

Ideas? Would a B.C. Warbeast or the such be an okay idea? I know they're known to be pretty low quality, but I figure a new set of pickups, maybe tuners, etc, will help it out.

I want something cheap so that when my paintjob looks like crap, I won't feel so bad about wasting money.

craigslist.com always has some decent looking ones for under 150

All that theory my guitar teacher tries to drill into my head just gets buried under piles of porn and I never manage to apply any of it

I've seen a few of those cheap. Are they actually decent? I've seen an Ibanez RG170 that I'm thinking over. It's at like $100 right now, including shipping, but there's two days left in the auction, so it will probably go over. I'll be keeping an eye on it though.

Just my opinion, I think it would be worth it to spend some time looking for a good quality body/neck guitar to mod even if you're going for a cheap guitar to mod for the first time. Having spent hundreds of dollars changing pickups, tuners, electronics only to find out the woods resonates terribly or the neck has playability issues which requires a $300 refretting job would be really painful.

In which case, I would recommend buying an unpainted warmoth guitar body (Soloist is most RG looking, they go for $165-225). And order a neck that fits your style as well. Even though it might be a little costly, in the end I think it would make it worth while to put effort/money modding the guitar.

Just my 2 cent though, try craiglists for any guitars out for less than $150 if you want.

Good luck!

Yeah, the main part I'm worried about is the wood and frets.. The rest is fixable at least. I'll take a look into that. I just found a Ibanez GAX50 that I can get for $115. There are no reviews for this, though I know it's a beginners guitar. Any comments?

The Warmoth ones are expensive, even buying the neck & body separately. Well out of my price range.

Yeah, I just want something where it doesn't really matter if I botch it. I'm not going to be doing any routing or anything, mainly want to screw with the wiring and painting, possibly install a kill switch.

Thanks for the review, about what I expected. Not quite the style I wanted, but I may go for it. Craigslist was also a no show for anything decent. I don't want a Squier. I want something that looks sharp. Like literally. Br00tal. :-D

So you mean you want something unconventional? like something pointy, u could always try a BC Rich SOB, not the best quality but cheap and if your modding it, it should be okay

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
