Hey UG:

I'm looking to finally get another electric guitar and amp after almost 6 months of not having them. Here's the problem. I have no idea what to beging looking for!

I play various kinds of music, from pop to alternative to classic rock to modern rock to metal... basically everything. And I want gear that can do this well. I'm looking to spend about $2,000 USD, so where should I begin?

PS: I am going to try different stuff at guitar stores, but I would like some good reference points so I don't waste my time on gear that won't work for me.

Thank you!

spend more money on your amp than your guitar

do you want a combo or head+cab?

This would be good amp wise http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Engl-Thunder-50W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-with-Reverb?sku=481596
Or this if you don't need reverb, which you probably could care less about with the price difference.

Guitar wise, people tend to give BC Rich a bad rep but I think they're pretty decent although you could probably do better for the price with some shopping around.

These are pretty decent too, http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Highway-One-HSS-Stratocaster?sku=512870
If you get the cheaper of those two, you could get this, although I'm not a huge fan, some people like them alot. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Les-Paul-Vintage-Mahogany-Electric-Guitar?sku=517536
Or this(kinda ugly) but again I'm not a huge fan but some people love them.

This is way better if you want a Gibson http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Les-Paul-Junior-Electric-Guitar?sku=580091
This is a better Strat since it has the piezo bridge http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Deluxe-Power-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=517582

I would prefer a head and cab, but if that becomes too much I can settle with a combo.

I was hoping to split amp and guitar pretty much half and half...

You probably won't get a good head and cab unless you spend the full 2k on it. The Bugera and B-52 might work though, although I've never played the Bugera. I don't really like the ValveKing but I know alot of people who do so you might wanna try it anyways, it could save you alot of money. The ENGLs I recommended in my other post dominate any of those, but since they're a combo you might not want them. But they are very loud combos and will compete with most stacks.

I used to own a Valveking, and did not really like it. Thanks for the ENGL suggestions though!

Also, have they discontinued XXX combos? I might look into those as well...

you can usually find XXXs around. I've seen quite a bit of them on Craigslist, eBay, Guitar Center, and Sam Ash.

Yea no problem. They did discontinue the XXX combos but they are usually fairly easy to find used. They'd probably do what you want as well. I've never played the combo but the stack wasn't bad at all, not as nice as the ENGL but it's also cheaper if you can find a good deal used. The only thing with ENGLs is that they are sometimes hard to find locally to try out.
