hi i'm kind of a newbie at bass, but experienced on guitar. i have a fender squier P-Bass and when i slide along the strings i get a loud scratchy sound that makes it sound awful. what might be causing this?

your fingers rubbing against the roundwound strings. if you get flatwounds you wont have as much of an issue

You don't say what your amp/cab/combo is or whether their is a horn/tweetrer in your cab.
G&L L2500
Squier Affinity Jazz Bass 5
Ashdown RPM pre-amp
Ashdown Little Giant 1000
300 watt 15" powered cab
450 watt 15" powered sub bass cab
2x10 + horn
1x15x10 + horn

I agree with both posts.

also, practice "one finger per fret" fingering technique if you don't allready do it to minimise sliding.
