Is it necessary to grow out fingernails in order to play classical/flamenco styles? That's not a possibility for me, because I play basketball. I've found that I've done pretty well using a regular pick between my thumb and index and fingerpicking with the rest. So, is it necessary in order to play "properly"?

Not entirely, but many traditional classical players believe you need the nails for the proper technique and tone but Francisco Tarrega didn't use nails late into his career.

You can get fake nails if you want.

Purists would say it is necessary, however you can play it with just the flesh of your fingers, the tone will just be different, and it is easier to play faster passages with your nails at times, but it won't stop you at all unless you hate the tone of just using your fingers.

Another idea would be to use fake acrylic nails (from any grocery/drug store) and put them on and then take them off before a game.

The only difference is the tone. The long nails arn't worth it for me and I just play with my fingers.

You could always buy finger picks.

In your situation, I highly recommend these: http://www.alaskapik.com/

Edit: I can give a personal testimony for them. I used them for two years; they're absolutely fantastic. Everyone says they look like they hurt, but you don't even feel them. They give you perfect control.
Sincerely, Chad.
