for the first time ever and I was wondering what I should expect. Is someone really going to try and sell me a line 6?? Am I going to run into some asshole that will be shredding his balls off while turned up on 11? Or is it actually going to be a pretty decent store to look around in? I'm scared Pit, is it really full of assholes like everyone says it is, or is it just an urban legend.

Oh, and there's always that "NO STAIRWAY" rule.

In California, I'd say you have a pretty good chance of running into some assholes. =\

guitar center can be an adventure because there of the many different types of people that could be there. The entire staff can be idiots, but sometimes you'll find someone who knows their stuff. They wont try to sell you anything you aren't interested in, so if they point to a line 6, just look insulted. They're salesmen after all, they are trying to find the right product to make a commission on. just ignore the noobs.

If you walk in and look lost or confused, expect the employees to swoop in and start helping you, so if that's something you don't want, look "confident" and inform them that you are just browsing for the time being.

Ignore the people playing on the in-store amps, if they're better than you, then they've been playing longer. If you're better, you've been playing longer, end of story. Don't get caught up worrying whether or not you "deserve" to be in the same store as a guitar god, should you encounter one...

Only if you SAY YOU"RE LOOKING FOR AN AMP will they try to sell you a Spider. Don't say you like Marshalls or they'll try to sell you an MG.
Please excuse my godawful username. I was thirteen.

Untrue...I've been playing ten months and I'm better than a friend of mine that has had guitar lessons for over 2 years. How long a person has played guitar has little to do with their skill. Some people get better quickly, some take time. It depends.

o and you must ward off the angry sea dragon upon entering the gates of guitar center

seriously tho if you are spending some coin never pay full price (unless your buying strings ). example, I just bought another Gibson 61' sg reissue and they go for $2000+ tax now. I told him that I probably couldn't afford it and I was just going to opt for the les paul on clearence ($1600). right there on the spot he dropped it to $1650 and I picked it up.

Well, the thing with GC and, well every other musical instrument store is, they're ALL the same. Don't believe what others tell you about people being different, hence stores being different and all that nonsense. EVERY STORE IS EXACTLY THE SAME.

I believe his point was more to do with skill level not dictating someones character or worth as a person... He's saying don't look down on noobs and don't feel intimidated by greatness. Good advice, I'd say.

You know what back when I got my SG I played Stairway on it in the store. Seriously who cares.

heavenbesideyou - YOUR GOING TO GUITAR CENTER AND YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE FUN AND NOT GIVE A CRAP WHAT THE OTHER PEOPLE THERE THINK! There are no stupid rules to it, and someone tries to sell you a Line 6 then tell them you don't want it. GOT IT!? You'll never see them again anyways. Have fun!

we dont have Guitar Centres here in Engerlandland, most of the guitar shops where i live are quite though, theyre usually empty when ive been in :/
#16
Bah, just do want you want and leave. Last time I was there, I was with my father, just looking around, and I asked about their computer hardware (was looking for a soundcard at the time and I was curious about instrument cards [GC is prob not the best place, but I was just looking around]).

I'm going later, too. If people start turning into assholes while you're there, just head into the Acoustics room, usually located in the back. Very few noobs go back there, and the experienced players are either really nice, or they keep to themselves.
