Hey guys, Im in a dorm this year and Im in an apartment next year. Right now, I can't really crank my Crate V18 to saturate the tubes and get that nice tube sound. I have pedals to make up for the lack of color at low volumes but I know Im not hearing my amps full potential with the volume at 3. My question is, should I get an attenuator, a new little amp, or just tough it out?

I have been looking at roland microcubes, cube 20x, cube 30x, epi valve jrs, and the blackheart little giant. I havent heard them in person except the valve jr combo and even that got pretty loud cuz of the tubes. Any recommendations? ideas? suggestions? no spider 3s haha...

The only attenuator on guitarcenter.com is way too expensive, are there any more out there to reccommend? with an attenuator, would I get my tube sound that comes at the higher volumes at new lower volumes? or does it lose the tube saturation?

Sorry for the long post, thanks for your help

I play mostly rock and blues, no metal

I think the little giant is pushing on the top end of my budget ($349)

you could get a weber attenuator, they are cheap and good, and you wont be able to crank those 5 watt amps either

I've heard good things from the Microcube. There is also the Peavey Vypyr 15.
You could always plug headphones into your amp if you want...

would that 15watt eurotubes attenuator work with the crate? I believe its 18 watts

Maybe a Blackheart "killer ant"?
Still it's a bit loud once cranked up, but you do get tube tone at a "somewhat" lower volume.

Or just stick it out and keep the V18 turned down and save yourself some cash.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

i would get the 25w or 50w version incase you buy a new amp in the future, and you can get one with a headphone out from here i think https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/minimass.htm

I like the Vypyr idea for dorm environment. Headphone could probably come in handy if you're like me and can only really play late at night.

Haha, yeah. I end up playing after 11pm a lot and have to use headphones. works out nice since i used to have only an acoustic and its hard to strum quietly on something without a volume switch >_>
