Im a Mac guy so i need some input from PC people, I just helped my grandparents buy a new PC for them. They are ONLY going to be using for the internet, possibly Microsoft Word, so they dont need a ton of RAM. However, I know vista itself takes a lot of RAM. Now to my question, the computer only has 1 gig of ram, is that enough to run vista well enough to surf the internet and stuff?

If not, I have a copy of XP that i might install on it, but id rather not because i was gonna use it.

thanks

get AT LEAST another gig of RAM
#9
Well if it's Vista, it'll probably need more RAM than a field of sheep. Are they just getting the cheapest one, perchance?

Anyone who says you need more than 1G of ram for MS word and browsing the internet is awfully wrong.

Vista eats RAM like a fat guy in KFC. You'd want at least 2GB's of RAM for it to function at it's best with those listed requirements.

I would go with 2 gigs, just to be sure, you can do what they need with 1 but 2 will make it perform a lot better.

People saying get 4 gigs are kinda of stupid since the maximum you can use on a 32 bit operating system is 3.

1 gig is the minimum required for Vista.

For internet and word, as long as they have a decent internet connection should be fine.

You can run Vista with less RAM, you just can't display the Aero graphic or some **** like that.

Ubuntu would suit their needs. Personally I wouldn't use Vista on a machine with less than 2 gigs of RAM. My machine has 1GB and I dual boot XP and Arch Linux. I plan on building a new PC when Windows 7 is released.

vista will run fine on 1 gig of RAM, just don't turn vista Aero on since it will hog ram.

Why would a fat guy be eating RAM in KFC?

disable the transparency and the windows transition animation things and you should be fine.

my laptop only had 1 gig and ran vista easily with no problems and I was using other stuff with it as well.

also Vista doesn't necessarily use more ram than XP it just uses it differently.

i know it can, but chances are, if it's his grandparents computer for surfing the internet it isn't, since 64 bit CPUs generally don't come in store bought machines unless you get something really high end, which would also be stock with more RAM.

my computer has 4 gigs of RAM and my computer uses 1 gig when idle.

Vista would probably run on 1 gig alone, but the second you start doing something...you're computer's going to start stressing. i would say 2 gigs would be the safest bet as far as RAM goes, you're going to have that 1 gig taken away no matter what, then you'll have that other gig to allow you to use the computer in whatever way you want.

what listed requirements? Word and IE?
1gb is fine man

Vista doesn't use your ram up, rather just puts something it thinks will be used later in there as to speed up your computer.
get them vista, they'll be happy

Linux and old people are are usually not compatible, the thing with Linux, that most people making blind Linux recommendations seem to forget, is that you actually have to be fairly well versed in how computers work to use it effectively, even with Ubuntu.

I have Vista and half a gb of RAM. It isn't easy to do many things at once. A full gb of RAM should do the trick.

I've installed Xubuntu on my familys computer at home and they're getting on fine without knowing anything about it. They haven't needed to touch the command line.

I have not had similar experiences, especially if something screws up (and it will eventually) widows can be pretty good about fixing itself, Linux isn't. Linux may be faster and all that, but it's not particularly user friendly for people who don't use computers often.

As long as you're not doing a whole lot of stuff, 1gb does the job fine. Using the internet and msn I use about 40% of my RAM when using Vista.

The biggest problem with linux is hardware support, I got all the hardware my family uses working for them when I installed it so theres really nothing to go wrong now. I wouldn't recommend linux to someone that didn't have someone readily available to help them.

Now I've typed that I realised I recommended linux to the guy in this thread...

The listen to the dumbasses that say "Z0mG g3Tz 2 G1gZ/xP".

1 gig is just fine for vista, as long as you don't try to play Crysis on high settings (which I HIGHLY doubt your grandparents will do).

I had issues doing basic stuff on Vista with 1 gig, everything worked, but it was slower than it should have been.

I have Vista running with 1Gb of RAM, and it works fine. It'll work for what your gparents want, which is what I mostly use it for.

I have Aero on as well, and it'll let me game on the rare occasions I game on my laptop.
