Breakdowns aren't just in 'core genres...

Do some research, there are different types of breakdown in almost every genre imaginable. So they probably date back quite a way, maybe not Mozart or Bach. But atleast to when bluegrass and such was first coming around
I deeply regret the 6661 in my username. Siiiigh. Damn you, 14 year old me, you edgy little bastard.

i was thinking pantera too, but raining blood has a breakdown, and it was in 86.

Exactly what I was thinking

I've always laughed when people say Pantera don't have breakdowns...

With boys it's like "here's an incredibly complex sport to learn with sophisticated rules and various interdependent roles to play in a social unit."

For girls it's like "here's Barbie...you're fat!"

^ I think it's who played the 'frost' breakdown that he's asking for.

Most likely a black metal band in this case.

Maybe I can use this thread to settle a debate a friend and I are having. I swear that the "see them try to bring the hammer down" part in Escape by Metallica (1984) is a breakdown. My friend claims that it isn't heavy enough to be a breakdown and that I have no idea what I'm talking about. Please help me settle this?

For those who haven't heard the song.

EDIT: To the post below mine: I had no idea Steve Martin could play banjo! He's one of my favorite actors, that's pretty cool.

Domination by Pantera is probably the earliest "hardcore type" breakdown that I know of.

Thats still better than any hardcore breakdown i hear today. Is the oldest one i know.
