I improvise, it teaches you about your personal voice, for want of a better word, and it improves your ability to pick notes to play.

I also do this. If you're drawing a mental blank, though, I look up exercises on UG.

I improvise, write some new riffs, try to figure out a song by ear, and so on and so forth.

When practicing, just remember not to check UG for some tips.
You will always, and I mean always, end up in the pit.

Lord knows what that does to your playing.

sometimes its tough because there are so many options out there

i try to stick with the routine of trying to memorise and get up to speed 1 arpeggio 1 scale 1 solo (i have a list of solos in order of difficulty pm me) 1 element of theory per month

Usually just some bluesy licks, or if im really not sure i'll play something mindless that requires no thinking at all, like "La Grange" or "Smoke On The Water" (Please dont kill me)
Come back if you want to
And remember who you are
‘Cause there's nothing here for you my dear
And everything must pass
