I'm asking this because I got into a fight with my mum (who is of Fijian, Indian and white descent) today. She complains about my music all the time, but today when I put in a mix CD which contained mostly metal songs, she told me that heavy metal was inherently racist. I tried to tell her that there are a few racist arseholes (Phil Anselmo being the first that comes to mind) but for the most part it isn't, and I cited RATM and Living Colour as examples. But she still won't listen.

So Pit, what are your opinions on the subject?

I'd appreciate it if we could keep racist statements/insults of my mum out of the thread, but I know that they're occupational hazards with you guys.

Parents just don't understand...

Edit: Is your mom hot? I was just wondering because Norah Jones is of Indian and white descent and she is ****ing gorgeous, and a lot of Fijian people are similar in ethnicity to Indian people (I don't actually know this for a fact, but Vijay Singh is from Fiji and he seems pretty Indian to me) so maybe your mom is hot like Norah Jones? Idk...

Anyway, the guy who used to play lead guitar in Sum 41 started a metal band now, and I think he's of Indian ancestry or something. So no. Metal is not racist. I don't think any kind of music is inherently racist, it all depends on the people who make it.

RATM and Living Colour aren't metal anyway, so don't get your knickers in a twist.

There's national socialist black metal, and there are probably some racist metal musicians. But why would there be more than in any kind of rock, eh? The vast majority of metal music can be called many things, but inherently racist? Nah.

Jazz had a lot of racism going along with it. Blacks often didn't get played, but their music would be if it was recorded by a white guy.

I am sorry but it is one of the unspoken laws of the universe that parents will never be able to understand their childrens' attraction to metal and the closest they can get is to tell them that it isn't even "music" and that doesn't require skill to learn as it is all the same.

music is whatever you interpret it to be.

charles manson interpreted the beatles music to be racist and he cited helter skelter (i believe) as being the song that made him send the order out to kill.

if you become racist whilst listening to metal, then that's how you interpret it... but no, metal is not generally deemed as being a racist genre.

interesting question

i've heard some fairly racist reggae tunes which wouldn't be terribly flattering to you white folk.

anyway..

music is just notes and sounds. the topic is entirely up to the lyricist.
Grammar and spelling omitted as an exercise for the reader.

unless you mean 'black metal'... that's obviously racist... because black people own the word 'black' and white people can't say it without being racist.

Charles Manson was probably right. Listen to the end of Baby, You're a Rich Man.. you can hear John sing, "Baby, you're a rich fag Jew." Then giggling at his own immaturity.

But it wasn't just Helter Skelter, it was all the songs. Every one of them from Piggies, to Blackbird, to Happiness is a Warm Gun.

My dad and stepdad both get it. Hell, Dad even came with me to see Tool and Shihad (even though they're not metal anymore).

I'm not even a hard out metalhead, more of a casual fan.

Metal? Racist? There's a whole sub-genre called "BLACK" Metal. Maybe all darker races were lumped into that category, but come on, "brown metal" ? That just sounds stupid.

1) phil anselmo isn't a racist arsehole, he pointed out that other ethnic groups say they're proud of their culture all the time, yet it's damn near illegal for whites to say it.

2) if you want to hear a really racist metal band, listen to deaths head

3) racist metal bands are racist. the rest aren't.

RATM are rap-rock. They have no metal influences, really; their riffs are mostly hard rock, funk. Rap vocals, rock/funk drums, funk bass.

Living Colour have no metal elements whatsoever. They're funk metal... metal being a loose word, as in this case it's hair/glam metal + funk = Living Colour. Hardly tr00.

Racist metal? Like, black metal? Seems pretty tolerant to me. Or maybe it's racist that there's no "white metal" (that I've heard of). Is there Indian metal?

Honestly life is racist, why is "black" evil and "light" good? Darth Vader falls to the "dark side" of the Force and gets voiced by a black guy until he returns to the "light side" as a white guy. Just wait for your mom to say something white or light colored is good and then call her racist.

Strict parenting clearly always works, never produces children who name themself "shadow_666" or anything .
If you're not getting enough gain, you should totally just daisy-chain some solid state amps with headphone jacks together. Remember: Need gain? Use a chain!

Metal is not racist, but some bands are. For example, a guy from a Black Metal band long time ago said something like "Our music is for white people because black are stupid and can't understand.". He is racist, but of course this doesn't mean thaT ALL Black Metal bands are racist.

And it's the same for EVERY genre... even a pop band can be racist.

uh, that doesn't make the music racist, it makes the system through which the general public access the music (not to mention the general public themselves) racist.

i don't think metal has any more racism in it than any other given genre.

Well, since we can't literally be talking about the music, being that it isn't tangible, then we are talking about the system in both situations.

'scuse me, funk + occasional chugged riffs =/= metal. Would James Brown be metal if he had some distortion?

TS, I know what you mean about parents assume the worst about music just because it's heavy. I mean she got disturbed when I put on Dream Theater's "Train of Thought" album in the car. She took no notice of the lyrics and what they were portraying, just that the music was 'scary' as she put it.

Also I keep hearing that Phil Alsemo and Axl Rose are racist. How are they racist? links?

what are lyrics?

can't they put forward views that could represent a personal feeling (inc. racism)?

i mean, granted, you can't hear a guitar lick and think "oh man, that guy REALLY doesn't like black people", but i'm sure the lyrics could.
