I was making up a tune and I found it easiest to capo only part of the neck.

Do some ppl do this instead of changing their guitar into an alternate tuning?

yeah, they even have this invention that's half a capo to only work on 3 strings.

Look for Third Hand capos too, they can fret specific strings. Look to fingerstyle players like Don Ross, Antoine Dufour, and their ilk. They do partial capos on the regular.
