What band has the best lyrics?
My vote is for Rise Against, opinions?

Tim McIlrath is amazing.
Anyway, post your opinion and lyrics to back it up if you wish.

Song; Re-education (Through Labour)
Lyrics;
To the sound of a heartbeat pounding away
To the rhythm of the awful rusted machines
We toss and turn but don't sleep
Each breath we take makes us thieves
Like causes without rebels
Just talk but promise nothing else

We crawl on our knees for you
Under a sky no longer blue
We sweat all day long for you
But we sow seeds to see us through
Cause sometimes dreams just don't come true
We wait to reap what we are due

To the rhythm of a time bomb ticking away
And the blare of the sirens combing the streets
Chased down like dogs we run from
Your grasp until the sun comes up

We crawl on our knees for you
Under a sky no longer blue
We sweat all day long for you
But we sow seeds to see us through
Cause sometimes dreams just don't come true
Look now at what they've done to you

White needles buried in the red
The engine roars and then it gives
But never dies
'Cuz we don't live
We just survive
On the scraps that you throw away

I won't crawl on my knees for you
I won't believe the lies that hide the truth
I won't sweat one more drop for you
'Cuz we are the rust upon your gears
We are the insect in your ears
We crawl
We crawl
We crawl... all over you

We sow the seeds to see us through
Our days are precious and so few
We all reap what we are due
A judge's sky no longer blue
We bring the dawn long overdue
We crawl
We crawl
We crawl... all over you

Rock on guys.

i agree with RA's lyrics being awesome.
i love 'Drones' and 'Hero Of War' :

He said
"Son...Have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say
If I said that you could."
Just carry this gun.
You'll even get paid."
I said
"That sounds pretty good.

Black leather boots
Spit shined so bright
They cut off my hair
But it looks alright
We marched and we sang
We all became friends
As we learned how to fight

A hero of war
Yeah that's what I'll be
And when I come home
They'll be damn proud of me
I'll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Because it's a flag that I love
And a flag that I trust

I kicked in the door
I yelled my commands
The children they cried
But I got my man
We took him away
A bag over his face
From his family and his friends

They tookoff his clothes
They pissed in his hands
I told them to stop
But then I joined in
We beat him with guns
And batons not just once
But again and again

A hero of war
Yeah that's what I'll be
And when I come home
They'll be damn proud of me
I'll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Because it's a flag that I love
And a flag that I trust

She walked
Through bullets and haze
I asked her to stop
I begged her to stay
But she pressed on
So i lifted my gun
And i fired away

And the shells jumped
Through the smoke
And into the sand
That the blood now had soaked
She collapsed
With a flag in her hand
A flag white as snow

A hero of war
Is that what they see
Just medals and scars
So damn proud of me
And I brought home that flag
Now it gathers dust
But it's a flag that I love
It's the only flag I trust

He said
"Son...Have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say
If I said that you could."

I Love the lyrics for Jimi Hendrix: Foxy Lady

Foxy
Foxy

You know youre a cute little heartbreaker
Foxy
You know youre a sweet little lovemaker
Foxy

I wanna take you home
I wont do you no harm, no
Youve got to be all mine, all mine
Ooh, foxy lady

I see you, heh, on down on the scene
Foxy
You make me wanna get up and scream
Foxy
Ah, baby listen now
Ive made up my mind
Im tired of wasting all my precious time
Youve got to be all mine, all mine
Foxy lady
Here I come

Im gonna take you home
I wont do you no harm, no
Youve got to be all mine, all mine

Here I come
Im comin to get ya
Foxy lady
You look so good
Yeah, foxy
Yeah, give us some
Foxy
Yeah, get it, babe
You make me feel like
Feel like sayin foxy
Foxy
Foxy lady
Foxy lady

(It may be a little basic but it brilliant :P)

The first person I thought of when I opened this thread is Tim from Rise Against.
He's ****ing great, and awesome live!

I can't bear the thought of losing,
I dread the attention winning brings
and ever since the day I came here
I can stand without your strings
I'm so sick of all these people
but I'm scared to be alone
and if this life has taught me anything
I forgot it long ago

And so I hit the ground and I'm still running but I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes
Hit the ground and I'm still running but I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes

The heart is something you can't control
We either choose to follow or be left on our own
So we're leaving here on a less-travelled road
As desperate cries grow louder, I know we're getting close, getting close

also...

It kills me not to know this but I've all but just forgotten
What the color of her eyes were and her scars or how she got them
As the telling signs of age rain down a single tear is dropping
Through the valleys of an aging face that this world has forgotten
There is no reconciliation that will put me in my place
And there is no time like the present to drink these draining seconds
But seldom do these words ring true when I'm constantly failing you
Like walls that we just can't break through until we disappear

****ing cliche-filled and painful to read. fanboys just go nuts over his mismatched eyes and his impersonal lyrics. nothing new there.

Nobody writes like Maynard James Keenan. Tool has the greatest lyrics EVER!

Schism:

I know the pieces fit, 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering. Fundamental differing.
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit, 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
Finding beauty in the dissonance.

...Amazing

Bright eyes, Bob dylan, Jeff Magnum.. hum...The smiths are quite straightforward but I like them. Radiohead have a perfect personality that ties with their music. I'm sure there's more.. the lyrics to aeroplane over the sea and Holland 1945 are paticularly stunning aswell as Easy lucky free, (That's me!) :P

I quite like Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) cause he can do many different styles, Bob Dylan keeps it simple but meaningful, and of course Good Ol' Steven Patrick Morrissey!

Jeff Magnum is probably the best that's been mentioned so far. Cedric Bixler-Zavala's stuff is pretty good too, and Jordan Blilie from Blood Brothers.

I'd have to say Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Pain of Salvation.
You might not know the latter, but to give you an impression, here's some fragments from their song 'Morning on Earth':

"For as long as I can remember I have wanted to
Silence every beating heart; every sound of breathing
Now there is something inside of me that aches as I hear you
Breathing here when you sleep between these morning sheets"

"Morning arrives on an Earth I've never seen before
Revealing a life that I never really understood
Strange, the way beauty can hurt the unopened eye
Much more than all of the filth and pain
That we're soaked in ever could"

And to top it all off, in monologue-style:
"An acquaintance, so oddly old - bred not to love
Suffers the beaten grounds of Idioglossia
We talk but we do not speak
Together only in our incapability to leave this fallen playground
We rule this Empire merely with these few crippled toys
Rust in our faces
This is what we can share - this is all we can lose
Still
Furiously we will linger to it with our lives
Cling to its rust and pains
Barefoot and torn
Bred not but born to love"

Just amazing.

I'd have to say Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan and Radiohead have the best lyrics, in my opinion.

The lyrics to the Pink Floyd album "Animals" are just fantastic.

Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse writes some really good lyrics:

"Third Planet"

Everything that keeps me together is falling apart,
I've got this thing that I consider my only art of ****ing people over
My boss just quit the job says he's goin' out to find blind spots and he'll do it
The 3rd Planet is sure that they're being watched by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped
When you get to the promise land your gonna shake that eye's hand
Your heart felt good it was drippin' pitch and made of wood
And your hands and knees felt cold and wet on the grass beneath
Outside naked, shiverin' looking blue, from the cold sunlight that's reflected off the moon
Baby cum angels fly around you reminding you we used to be three and not just two
And that's how the world began
And that's how the world will end
A 3rd had just been made and we were swimming in the water, didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter
When it occurred to me that the animals are swimming around in the water in the oceans in our bodies and another had been found another ocean on the planet given that our blood is just like the Atlantic
And how
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were

My all time favourite has to be Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio. He is so underated and writes some of the most beautiful songs yet some of the most dark, disturbing and honest lyrics I've ever heard. I also like Brian Molko from Placebo, hes the only one who writes love songs that don't makes me sick, and Micheal Stype from R.E.M, who is just awesome.

Alex Turner has incredible skill and potential as a lyricist.

Mike Skinner's very good also.
#30
Buddy Nielson from Senses Fail.
even if they're 'emo,' there's a lot of truth to their lyrics.
and I do agree that Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio's pretty great.
I mean, just look at Prevent This Tragedy. there's a lot of rhyming, but it doesn't feel forced or contrived.
or, look at I'm Dying Tomorrow. the lyrics are exactly as they should be for a song with a title like that.

Verse, if not have heart. Two best bands I've ever heard, especially in lyrics.

______________________________________________________

Verse - Story of a free man. (There's 3 chapters, but it's continuous.)

Chapter One: The end of innocence

"A concrete bed, a weathered awning made of cardboard that keeps the
morning sun from his eyes. He never knew much about why his life became
so hard. Sleep one night under this bridge in this man's shoes, and you'll
learn there is no god. Lets go back to the early days. When life read just
like a blissful page, in a book with a happy ending, even if that means
were just pretending. Before everything this kid knew as unbroken. Became
nothing but a state of insecurity. In the early days he lived life with his
eyes un-open, conditioned to always go quietly. One day his father went
off to war. To fight a war for something that's not worth fighting for.
A forceful pry at his eyes to see a beautiful world has been taken from you and me.
"This is killing me," he said to his mother. "Is this the true face of humanity?"
he said to his mother. "The weight of this has got me on my knees," he said
with no response from his mother. The boy was scared now. He got the silent
treatment from a person he confided in. No longer sure where to turn, he jumps
right into a new life of uncontrolled rage and depression. He embraces
addiction to numb his new affliction."

Chapter Two: The cold return

"Dad came home in a body bag. He never had a chance to say goodbye. He was
A good man - fooled to believe in a fake ideal. His veins soon pulsed
With dissent from what he had learned right before he died. The cold reality
Of the rich sending the poor off to fight a war for the corporate *****s.
"Will we ever see an end to this?" he said. Still stuck with addiction,
He numbs his mind. He wants to return to the time when he was young and blind.
"Will we ever see an end to this?" he said. He knew life would never be the
Same from here on out. He felt those storms coming in with those dark
Approaching clouds. "Will we ever see an end to this?" he said. He's homeless now.
He throws his mind away and struggles with thoughts of suicide at the end
Of days. He wants to see the end of this. This is the beginning of his concrete
Bed under a bridge. "This is rock bottom. I can only go up from here. I'm
Looking ahead, and I think I'm ready to face what I've always feared."
He screams out at the metropolis in front of him. This is where he learns
To sink or swim. He turns to face a monster in front of him that is the epitome
Of limiting. He takes the needle from his bed side, gives it a look for
The last time. It's the last time..."

Chapter Three: Serenity

"I'm walking away from this," he said with conviction.
He walked away a new man... This is the story of a free man.

*Note* This song is about the singer's child hood, his father and his life.

The Doors

Nobody writes lyrics as mystifying and powerful as Mr. Mojo Risin' (Jim Morrison)

As for individuals how can you say anyone other than Bob Dylan?

Pete Doherty/Carl Barat (The Libertines)

Monkey asked the mouse before
If she loved anybody more than he
It turns you into stone
Now I'm reversing down the lonely street
To a cheap hotel when I can meet the past
And pay it off and keep it sweet
It's sweet like nothing no
It's just like nothing at all

zum Beispiel. amazing band (+Babyshambles) |8o-)

, Pete Doherty/Carl Barat (The Libertines)

Inside I felt
So, so alone
Locked in a room
Waiting til kingdom come
Although I felt elated
I felt like I was scum

I was carried away
Caught up in an affray
They let him away, he sang
We'll meet again some day
Oh my boy, there's a price to pay
