Do you refer to the following context as math, or maths? Which is the proper way to say it?
"I have to go do my *context* homework."
"I have *context* class in an hour."
Poll up soon.

In the States, I've never heard it has maths. That's odd.

You usually say 'math' if you're a Yank.

Maths, because (as already stated) it's an abbreviation of mathematics and exists only in plural form. I know Americans say 'math', but you don't go aorund saying 'physic' instead of 'physics' do you? No. 'Maths' is correct

It's not a bloody plural though is it.
There's no such thing as a mathematic. The term is mathematics, hence maths.
Math isn't particularly wrong, but in English it's maths.

I'm sure that there was some logical explanation for the american use of math, but I can't remember it.
there must be one because I remember conceding that there was no right or wrong and both were acceptable depending on where you came from.
can anyone rationalise the use of the word 'math'?

Math is as much a contraction of mathematics as maths. As far as I know it's purely a dialectical thing, so nrither is wrong. I have always said maths, but now, math seems to sound better... I talk to Americans too much.

Hate to break it to you Brits, but "Maths" isn't a contraction of Mathematics. Isn't, for example, is a contraction of is and not, you need two words to make is a contraction. Now "Math" and "Maths" are both abbreviations of Mathematics, and often times abbreviations add or subtract letters to make the abbreviation more fluid sounding as this is the reason for an abbreviation in the first place. SO technically either "Math" or "Maths" is correct based on local dialect and colloquialisms. Therefore you limey blokes and us dirty yanks are both correct. Yay for getting along!
