how do I take em off of the startup list? I remember coming across it one day, but I can't find it now. for some reason I thought I had to run regedit, but apparently that's not it, cuz that looked like a bunch of stuff I shouldn't be messing with.

start, run, "msconfig" (no quotes). far left is a startup tab that u can change what processes start when windows starts. there is also a startup folder in start, programs.

and u are correct, dont do regedit unless u REALLY know what ur doing.
