Hi,
I've been recording at home for a while now just to demo tracks and riffs for my bandmates.
I use a Zoom multi-fx, into a Behringer 6 track mixer, into a PC with Reaper (I know, it's a cheap set up!).

Anyhow, recently I have started planning to do some better quality demo tracks and I was wondering the best place to EQ for a good sounding guitar track.

The sound I have from the Zoom sounds good enough through an amp, but once recorded it sounds muffled.
Not terrible, but it does lose the top end.

Now, I could re-EQ the patch in the MFX, which means it wouldn't sound good "live" so to speak, or tweak the EQ on the mixing desk.
Or do it in the recording software.

I'm guessing it's best to sort it out at source i.e. from the MFX but this would mean recording something, then listening to it back since it sounds fine in the room.

Finally, to fix a sound like this, should I add treble, or remove bass?

Thanks.

You should try to get the sound as good as possible in the multi-effect unit and then tweak the tone in your DAW. EQ, Compressor and possibly De-Esser are good plug-ins to start with.

Are you using DI-box between the PC and the Zoom? Because if you don't, that might explain the bad sound.

Could you post some clips? After hearing them, it would be easier to help.

The Zoom has a DI function which, I believe, is engaged (will check later).

The sound isn't amazing - it's a SS unit after all, but I wouldn't say it was super bad either.

I'll try and post a clip soon - where is best to upload?
