im trying to find a good example of poetry over music.
what is a cool way to include music in a poem?

specifically, something that isn't in time. (no drum beat)

Quote by Cradle of Filth
I bled on a pivotal stretch
Like a clockwork Christ
Bears sore stigmata, bored

And as I threw Job, I drove
Myself to a martyred wretch
To see if I drew pity
Or pretty litanies from the Lord

So the plot sickened
With the coming of days
Ill millennia thickened
With the claret I sprayed
And though they saw red
I left a dirty white stain
A splintered knot in the grain
On Eden’s marital aid

So glad for the madness(x2)

I walked the walls naked to the moon
In Sodom and Babylon
And through rich *****s and corridors
Of the Vatican
I led a sordid Borgia on

I read the Urilia text
So that mortals wormed
As livebait for the dead

And as I broke hope, I choked
Another Pope with manna peel
Dictating to DeSade
In the dark entrails of the Bastille
And as He wrote, I smote
A royal blow to the heads of France
And in the scene of guillotines,
I saw others, fallen, dance

I was an incurable
Necromantic old fool
A phagadaena that crawled
Drooling over the past
A rabid wolf in a shawl
A razor’s edge to the rule
That the stars overall
Were never destined to last

So glad for the madness(x2)

I furnaced dreams, a poet, foe of sleep
Turning sermons with the smell
On Witchfinder fingers
Where bad memories lingered
Burning, as when Dante
Was freed to map Hell

I sired schemes and the means
To catch sight of the seams
And the factories inbetween...

And midst the lips and the curls
Of this **** of a world
In glimpses I would see
A nymph with eyes for

Eyes of fire that set all life aflame
Lights that surpassed art
In sight , that no intense device of pain
Could prise their secrets from my heart

I knew not Her name
Though her kiss was the same
Without a whisper of shame
As either Virtue or Sin’s
And pressed to Her Curve
I felt my destiny swerve
From damnation reserved
To a permanent spin...

So glad for the madness

I remember looking up the lyrics to Babylon AD because I was interested in the video. I also learnt that Dani Filth has a degree in English. As I was reading the lyrics, I realised it was pretty good poetry. The song and genre isn't my sort of thing (I'm not a fan of black metal or whatever at all) but you've got to appreciate the poetry he's written - sounds very complex actually and not something you could write in a few weeks.

"Forever and a Day"- Silverstein

At the end of the song, they quote "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein in its entirety over music.

It's fantastic. I know a lot of people don't care for Silverstein, but "When Broken is Easily Fixed" is fantastic, and that moment is the perfect ending, IMO.

i don't know who he is, what does he do?

i have a friend that i write songs with, he writes lyrics and i do music... he also does poetry.
we recorded him reciting one of his poems for our demo cd, and im trying to figure out a way to include some music on it if i can.
he did it acappella, no music or beat behind it.. but he asked to throw music in it, if i could.

the poem is really slow, we slowed down the tempo and hooked a reverb pedal and a phase pedal to the microphone, and it is about misdirection.

+1

bob dylan is a great lyricist.

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

no .. he isn't singing. he is talking.. like jim morrison style.

and we're putting the music after we recorded him. the poem doesn't follow a beat
that is the key thing, music with no beat

What an absolutely wonderful song, I fell asleep listening to that last night. As for the poetry thing, the music for Lumsk's album Det Vilde Kor was all written to poems by Knut Hamsun. Its all in Norwegian, and it really is not a very good album, but I guess its the same concept. Actually, that is how I write all of my music, they all start out as poems, and eventually evolve into songs.

be my girl - sally by the police

the first time i heard this monolouge/spoken verse my head exploded. just when you think you know where its going, it goes somewhere completley different. unfortunatley i couldnt find a youtube video as a lot is lost when you cant hear the way its read.

I was blue and lonely, I couldn't sleep a wink
And I could only get unconscious if I'd had to much to drink
There was somehow, something wrong somewhere
And each day seemed grey and dead
The seeds of desperation were growing in my head
I needed inspiration, a brand new start in life
Somewhere to place affection, but I didn't want a wife
And then by lucky chance I saw in a special magazine
An ad that was unusual, the like I'd never seen
"Experience something different with our new imported toy
She's loving, warm, inflatable and a guarantee of joy."
She came all wrapped in cardboard, wore pink and shrivelled down
A breath of air was all she needed to make her lose that frown
I took her to the bedroom and pumped her with some life
And later, in a moment, that girl became my wife
And so I sit her in the corner and sometimes stroke her hair
And when I'm feeling naughty I blow her up with air
She's cuddly and she's bouncy, she's like a rubber ball
I bounce her in the kitchen and I bounce her in the hall
And now my life is different since Sally came my way
I wake up in the morning and have her on a tray
She's everything they say she was, and I wear a permanent grin
And I only have to worry in case my girl wears pins
Remember through sounds
Remember through smells
Remember through colors
Remember through towns
