My windows media player plays a song fine for a few minutes, but then red X's come up next to the song and my computer slows down. Does this happen to anyone else?

It happens to me only when I change my device.

My guess is your song data is corrupt...

I had a similar problem like that.
so I just downloaded a new player.

What I'm using now is this
Media player with simple UI and low memory use. Offers plugin support for new features. Includes link to forum focused on application. [Win32]

It works at least 120% better than WMP does for me. However, download Media Player Classic and you have it all. (I use it, and it plays literally everything.)
