Well Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Guthrie Govan believe so. It depends on the model and company.

I have an RG1570, absolutely wonderful guitar. Its made of basswood, alot of the high end prestige Ibanez's are. Its light and sounds good, i like it.

Some people regard basswood as a bad wood for guitars. This is because low end manufacturers use bad quality basswood, so it makes bad quality guitars.
