I was just watching a video of synyster gates. Right before he started playing. he grabbed this thing of wax and rubbed it all of the body of the guitar. What exactly does that do?

I guess its like a surf board. I was watching the "Live in the LBC" DVD and I noticed he anchors. So its gotta be for grip.
