firstly: no "why do u need an 8 string" etc etc comments.

looking to get myself an 8 string.
options:
ibanez RG2228 (played it, amazing guitar but expensive)
ESP LTD fm-408 (cant play it but its cheap)
schecter C-8 (cant play this one either, cheap but worried about neck thickness)
(when i say i cant play, i mean that no stores near me stock them)
can anyone offer some advice on my options?

That schecter is actually a limited edition model that is only going to have 100 pieces made, so you'll probably have a hell of a time tracking one down.

I played the LTD briefly once, but I don't remember much of anything about it.

Just for the record (in case you were looking for more options), the following companies also offer 8-string models:

Klesh Guitars

Blackmachine Guitars

LGM Guitars

Nevborn Guitars

Hufschmid Guitars

Other manufacturers, like Veillette, would probably make you one.

Check out Ormsby Multiscale 8 string. its about the same price as the guitars u want, but since its custom, u can get different pickups instead of the run of the mill EMG 808.
U could even get lundgrens on it.
i have a modest rig which consists of guitar related stuff

If you're limited in budget, you can't really go wrong with an Agile Intrepid 8.
Q: Favourite Pink Floyd song?
A: The one where they get wicked high and play Emin and A for an hour.

Except shipping would be expensive and they only make them in select batches.

You're probably right about that one, and I didn't see that the dude was from Tasmania.

But still, it's another option to consider. You can get them made with either EMG 808s or whatever else you'd like. There's a neck-thru model and a bolt-on. It looks killer. It sounds pretty decent too. It's decked out with some name-brand appointments for a pretty low price. I'd say it's a good deal, even if the shipping's a bit expensive.

Agile intrepids are a good bet, great scale length and solid specs. It wont be as high quality as the RG2228 or the SC608 for example, but should serve what you need it for.

But then it does really matter what your budget is.

i cant afford the RG8 new.
i can afford the agile, but im worried about my smallish hands and the long scale. will it matter?

To be fair there is no way to prepare for an 8 other than playing a 7, if that seems big to your hands then i would reconsider you're choice on an 8 string entirely, rather get a baritone 7 and detune it.

i have a 7 string and have no problems playing it at all

the agile has the same scale as the RG2228, 27" if i recall correctly, agiles look pretty awsome and theyre cheap, you can get it in more colours and they have options as to what fingerboard woods you want, so i'd go for the intrepid, you could go custom fro the price theyre asking for a 2228

an 8 string is normal tuning with 2 basses.
so its (from low to high) Fsharp BEADGBE

It just follows the 4th's tuning arrangment.

The agile is a 28.625 (or so) inch scale as far as i'm aware, so there might be some teething problems as first but the change should be exactly like when you changed to a 7 tbh.
