My uncle is know finally allowed to come back to the US. He was living in Costa Rica for 4 years in order to escape the tax of the US, since he was in a "illegal" business. He was a bookie (for all who don't know what that is, he took gambling bets, such as sports games). He owed government around $2-3 million, but they settled with him for $2,400 and 7 hours in a police station cell. I'm finally so excited that he can come back to the US.

Has anyone had any family members in similar situations or has anyone had the US settle something for a ridiculous cost?

Edit: Sorry it was actually $2,400, didnt realized i put $24,000 before

When people owe money and aren't able to repay them it's generally bad for the economy. Especially to the goverment which use the money for various projects and funding.

Op says he owes 2-3 million to the government which I assume he means in tax and unless he states otherwise I will assume that it is(plus I highly doubt the government would lend him money to start his own bookies). I also don’t think the US government is to bothered otherwise why would they compromise? In reply to your previous post many would argue that government spending is bad for the economy in general, I don’t personally but there are many that do.

Maybe they didn't lend him money for the bookmaking.

How is goverment spending bad for the economy...? I'm talking about funding schools, maintaining roads, bailing out GM e.t.c.

what Kensai meant was that it doesn't matter if it was a loan or tax, either way he cheated the US govt. out of $2-3m. And them not wanting it back/getting it back is why (or part of why) the economy is down the shitter.

That was bad, they shoul have invested that money in a prospering company to create an equal amount of jobs that were going to be lost when G.M. closed down instead of trying to rescue a dying enterprise, it's just a matter of time before they'll need another bail-out.

and good to hear you'll get to see your uncle again ts

I'm not too interested in the GM shenaningans honestly. I assume that having so many people losing jobs simultaneously would create some sort of 30's depression in some communities. More of a short-term solution.

And yes, have fun with your uncle ts

Uhm, no. Not if the law is stupid.

Everyone tries to evade taxes. Perhaps not to that extent, but it happens. Hell, most businesses scam their way out of paying ****loads in taxes.

Tax is money taken away from the consumer and as a result lowers aggregate demand (money that would be readily spent on products). However as stated in my previous post I don’t think government intervention/spending is a bad thing however they have been trying to disprove me otherwise: P.

Also in reference to your first post I don’t think his tax dodging uncle is the problem, its because of the banks we are in this mess.(Although his tax dodging doesn't particularly help, however if the government really wanted to tax him they would make it legal and remove it from the grey economy.)

That will only bridge the gap between poor/rich won't it? With less taxes you get less money spent on those who have no money to spend.

In the UK they are in the private sector however like all businesses they are monitored by the government via law and all that. Although there were rumours of them building government funded casinos.

Yes hence why it is popular with conservatism

A criminal against the USA, yes. A reason for the worlds economic crisis, no.

Well it s a grey area for me but I understand that the different states have different attitudes towards it and I believe it is in the Bible (can anyone confirm that for me?) which may explain why it is illegal in some states.
