Strat+DiMarzio HS2/YJM+Marshall+FOCKING FURY=Malmsteen tone.
You should tinker with either a coil split or your middle pickup.

And, you know, a scalloped fretboard.
But you'd never notice unless you were told
I really like his sig Strat, tbh. Really sticks out in the ultra-conservative Fender catalogue.

i would trade my rg for the strat but

1. the rg is savage (with a block trem)

2. I just want a similar tone. not to be as fat or have an ego like him nor to have the same guitar lol

*Looks up the 350DX* Yeah, your not going to get Malmsteeny with that. If you don't have much money, go used; there are plenty of great deals on used strats on Craigslist.

Agreed, I just hate the fact that I think he put a set of DiMarzio bucker's in the neck and bridge, and I prefer an SSS strat.

First you'll need a cheese grater.....ahahhhh

Seriously - not a good tone - some Strat.....any plus a Marshall JCM8009002000 etc

What everyone else's said. But if you want a shortcut, just learn to play the same thing over and over really fast, and eat a lot of donuts. And practice UNLEASHING THE FOCKING FURY! You may want to start by going up to random women and asking them to throw water on you, then UNLEASH THE FOCKING FURY! on them.

Probably a Strat with stacked humbuckers on it. But I think you're gonna need to be as fast as him to really get the tone. His sound tone comes probably some 80s Marshall and the stacked buckers in an Alder guitar, but sweeping arpeggios is what really makes his tone.

I like his tone too btw. I'd like to get one of those DiMarzio stacked humbuckers in my Strat's neck at some point.

You realized you just called about 30% of strat players and 50% of Marshall players posers including the famous ones, right?

Well, with all due respect, trying to get even a similar tone to a mid-bridge strat with an HSH guitar is like trying to get 100MPH in a Model-T. It's possible, but it's not worth the effort. Not to say a humbucker is like a Model-T, but it's an analogy.

XD Alright then. For a good neoclassical tone on the RG, I'd say put it's drive a little past 5, crank most of the EQ, and use either the bridge humbucker or the middle singlecoil. I don't play much neoclassical though, so I'm not a great source on this.

dont know why you would want that sort of tone but I had read an interview with him somewhere (cause i like to laugh at what an ass he is) and he mentioned that he turns up the treble pretty much all the way the mids up a lot and cuts out most of the bass.

go figure

Malmsteen uses Single coils bud... and if im not mistaken his marshalls are 70's..

Wanting someone elses tone isnt original then is it

But yea, single coils and a marshall is the only way really. I have that RG and if u wack the selector on single coiled H and S (second in from bottom) then you start to get that very clear distortion he gets. But still, it's gunna be hard with that guitar.
#34
Best thing you can do is to set your guitar to the single coil pickup in the middle and make sure not to pull too much MID out of your sound on the amp setting. Start with a zeroed out EQ setting on the amp and slow increase/decrease each high/mid/low until you've got something similar. But a huge part of his sound is that single coil pickup. I think I've got some pictures I took of his rig, amps, and pedals somewhere when I worked his concert at the Performance Center. I'll see if I can find them for you (they may not be detailed enough to get anything useful, though).

Being that your single coil is in the middle position means you're going to have to crank the highs, by the way.

Yeah.
He's an extension of his instrument.
I.E. The incredible resonance of his fat ass eliminates the need for bass in the EQ and actually necessitates dialing it out.

You could try wiring a coil split into the RG, or getting somebody to do it for you.

He uses DiMarzio HS-3 pickups which are single-coils sized humbuckers I believe. And as for amps, Plexi's and Mark II 50 watt's. With a huge ass wall of cabs.
#38
Yep, his amps are 50 watt jmp heads, dunno if they're lead spec or bass spec though, but if they're plexi panels then they're late 60s if they're metal panels then they're early to mid 70s.
