depends on how you define "good lyrics" you could probably churn out tons of cathcy pop lyrics, but you probably won't be able to do anything Dylanesque.

NO. Whether you write punk or Metal, you don't need to be poetic (complex words or sentence structure, proper meter, rhymes, etc...) As long as your lyrics fall nicely onto the rhythm of the music, you're good to go.

No, you don't. It's not just about the lyrics- it's about delivery as well. Fantastic lyrics can be ruined if the delivery just isn't right, or you can write crap lyrics and be a fantastic musical storyteller based on how you deliver it. For example:

Not great lyrics, but the delivery makes them great.

And:

Better lyrics, but even better delivery, making it a great performance.

A lot of lyrics are simple, yet effective. As mentioned earlier, punk and metal lyrics need not be excessively poetic, yet they have a meaning to them.

In fact, some metal lyrics seem to try too hard to be poetic, but end up saying nothing.

I think the absense of "poetic" elements in the lyrics can be good in its own way. It sort of shows that you're a regular person, not some larger-than-life figure that many of us regard our favourite rockstars as. Joe Strummer wrote and sang his lyrics like a regular person, not like a literature fanatic with 5 years of training in opera vocals. And I think therein lies the appeal of his music.

There are other examples. That was just the first one I could think of.

He does have a vocabulary that'll blow your mind.
And what is more, there's been a bloody purple nose and some bloody purple clothes that were messing up the lobby floor. It's just apartment house rules so all you 'partment fools remember : one man's ceiling is another man's floor.

I just watched the Counting Crows video, and I noticed I've heard these lyrics before:

Maria came from nashville with a suitcase in her hand
She said shed like to meet a boy who looks like elvis

The Gaslight Anthem sing more or less the same thing in their song "High Lonesome". Is this a quote from a movie or something? Can anyone explain?

It's a nod to Counting Crows. They change the lyrics to "I wish he kinda looked like Elvis" or something like that.

yeah, but when you use big words just for the sake of using big words it pretty much means you're a pretentious tool.

You're jumping to the conclusion that he sits and tries to use as many "big" words as he can.

How can you prove that it isn't just his style of writing?

I think it is his style of writing, but that still makes him a pretentious tool.
