i think noise gates take away buzz and hum from the sound and compressors literally compress the sound

Noise gates cut out the noise of your pedals.

Compressors level out all the notes so they all sound at the same volume.

Basically, gates just cut out any noise in your line while you ARE NOT playing. It's called a gate because it opens and closes. Simply, when you aren't playing the gate is closed, cutting off noise. When you play, the gate opens.
