It helps, yes. But the difference isn't HUGE. The heel of the neck is still in your thumb's way.

There are no solos that you will not be able to play without a cutaway. You may need to play an octave down at some points, but that's just part of the game. Having a cutaway only changes the playability of the upper frets slightly.
