for my birthday, im deciding if i should get a fender hot rod deluxe. ive played them before, and they sound amazing. im trying to go for a really nice clean tone and then a somewhat light distorion (like jimi hendrix). so if i did get that amp, what tubes should i get for it?
#2
The stock tubes are pretty decent, keep them. Spend your money on an OD pedal, because they can only do any kind of distortion at all when fully cranked and they are loud mofos.

If all you had to go on was the forum you'd think a Decimator could cure noise caused by dodgey stage lighting and restock the ocean's population of sperm whales

Go blues deluxe. im not saying that just because i have one either. The gain stage is terrible on the HRD, and the BD gain sucks too, but a lot less. Read the Everything you need to know about tubes sticky thread. That should help you out.

Get a HRD or BD and a Zendrive. It's low-mid gain heaven.

Fryette Ultra Lead
Peavey 6505
THD Flexi 50

Gibson R0 Prototype

If you absolutely have to replace tubes right away, get these for power tubes in the HRD.

And one of these for the preamp.

But seriously, an HRD with a Zendrive, especially one that you put a nice 12AX7 in, sounds amazing. It's kind of like a mix between a cranked AC30 and Plexi with all the harmonics.

It's on the products page close to the bottom. It looks like the price went up about $20. The one at the bottom is the one with a tube. It sounds amazing through my DeVille.
EDIT: The demos are recorded through a Fuchs I think so the tones a little better there than mine is. Also, the gain goes a bit higher than that, but not a whole lot. If you need more gain the Mosferatu on that page has very similar characteristics but more gain.

its a pedal?
what kind of effect?
or better way of saying it, what does is sound like most

It's a pedal. It's really small, even smaller than MXR pedals. It's supposed to sound like a Dumble, which itself sounds like a really great tube amp cranked up. The demos on the site should give you an idea. Also, if you listen to Robben Ford the tone is very similar, but can get extremely different at different settings.

Oh, I don't know how I could've forgot but you could get a Lovepedal COT and it should have you covered for Jimi tone. It's what it was made for and Lovepedal hit it nearly dead on.

im also in love
just by hearing it.
i bet it sounds ten times better in person

Definitely, especially through a good Marshall. I got the chance to demo it next to a real Plexi and it sounded great. Definitely not the same since it's supposed to sound like one with 6550 tubes and the one I played had EL34s but it was really nice. It worked great through almost every amp I played it through, which was a Bassman reissue, 84 JCM800, Twin Reverb reissue, 76(I think) Marshall Super Lead, Seymour Duncan(unknown model), Fuchs ODS, Fuchs Lucky 7 and pretty much every tube amp that a Guitar Center would normally stock, but since I was at a local store I got to crank all the amps and it was the ****. It was some of the best tone I've managed to get, especially with the EJ strat and 70s Les Paul I got to use
