What does it mean when a CD has been "remastered"? What exactly is the process of "remastering"?

(I cringe to think that a band like Nirvana will soon have their own remasted Nevermind or In Utero. I hate the music business! lol j/k)

i think it's just they improve the quality and clarity of the tracks. Like in films, they improve sound and the video quality.

The track "Pennyroyal Tea" in the self-titled compilation album is a remastered version of the one found on In Utero. Go and compare them and you'll realize that it sounds BETTER, particularly the guitar track.

It's pretty much the process of going back to old albums and re-EQ'ing and balancing them etc
