Go for a Firebird. I've got an Explorer, and it's not the best guitar I've played on, and it feels kinda unbalanced
#6
Am i the only one thinking firebird, but with the words explorer crudely painted onto it?

I personally find Explorers sexier than Firebirds, but go with whatever you want.

Explorer.

Firebirds are boring.

Explorer=more wood=more resonance=damn good looks.
#17
Normally I'd say Firebird, but with a Floyd, definitely an Explorer, a Floyd on a Firedbird would seem really out of place to me

Anyone else see the irony in smashing a guitar that says "peace and love" ?

firebird because they are rare. you always see explorers... what color is it going to be. you should do either vintage sunburst or black. its hard to see it anyother color.

Explorer. A Floyd on a Firebird would look odd, as Firebirds normally are classic rock-oriented, and Explorers are normally Metal instruments, except Edge's. And I cant find a template for a Firebird myself, so Explorer.
#23
Firebird. Pretty much the only Gibson I like. That blueish-silver one is frackin' sexy.

Explorers look like the failed attempt by some kid to design the most br00taL guitar ever

Firebird.

No question.

Non-reverse is best, but I'm probably WAY in the minority on that one.

And as for the Floyd, well, it wouldn't really word on a Firebird. A Maestro Vibrola would be the most authentic, but they SUCK. A Bigsby would work much better.

And yes, either the sunburst or the old Gibson Pelham Blue would do the trick nicely.

But of course, that's if I were doing it. I've never been able to afford an original one, so I bought an Eastwood Stormbird. It's awesome, and makes me want to build one. Eastwood doesn't make one in Pelham Blue, or with mini humbuckers, but that's my dream guitar. The Stormbird has 2 P-90s, but I've got a jones for one with three mini-humbuckers. Pelham Blue finish, with all gold hardware and three mini humbuckers, and a gold Bigsby. Whooo, boy!

Sorry. Back to reality.

My vote for you is Firebird, and I'll leave it at that.

If you're intent on the FR, make an explorer. If you would settle for a Bigsby or simply a non-trem bridge, go for a Firebird.

I've just relised something...

Are firebirds just explorers with shorter, curvier horns and a different electronics/ harware configuration? Except the headstocks...

Well, I think Gibson modified the Firebird to be pointier and more agressive looking for heavier styles of music when they designed the Explorer

No, the Explorer came first. The Firebird was designed by a car designer, who based it off the tail "fins" of (then) modern cars.

got any ideas where i could get a maestro type tremolo system (im in aus) i could try contacting epiphone?
#33
Hmmm. I probably like Firebirds better, but the Explorer definitely looks wicked.
#34
It seems that lately everybody and their grandma builds explorers. Break the trend and build a firebird.

And I personally like firebirds better.
#35
I voted explorer: I regret it now a firebird would look awsome with a floyd.
#36
If you could find plans I'd vote for an RD body since its halfway between the two.
Skeet UK is awesome, he can get WD Music parts discounted.
#37
^RD! Yes! (edit: and a Firebird Headstock for it...)

Otherwise I'll say Explorer if you're dead set on adding a Floyd. They look like arse on Firebirds.
#38
Floyd + Firebird = Pot.
That's just awesome. Firebird it must be. Plus it's winning.
It must be a Firebird VII though, or at least a V, nothing less please.

If its between the firebird and explorer he might be shooting for a more Studio style bird.
