Well, I've grown tired of the whole Vegetarianism threads at pretty much every forum on the internet. But I was having a talk with my sister about this. The subject was brought up by this picture:

Basically my sister eats meat, but she is very against killing animals for sport or clothing.

I'd have to agree with her. Although I'll be honest, I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about this. I was wondering what you guys think?

Killing an animal for meat and killing it for clothing/sport are pretty much the same thing.

Usually when you kill an animal for sport (IE: deer hunting, etc.) you cook the meat (at least when we go hunting we do). Some people even keep the pelt and turn it into something, or sell it.

Fixed.

But in all seriousness, I disagree with killing any creature capable of pain.*
Thus, I can not hurt a person, nor a a fish, or cat, or a dog, etc, etc.

I highly disagree with killing for sport.

I dislike doing so for clothing (although, to my dislike, my shoes and belt are leather. I feel really guilty when I wear them - but waste not, want not - or whatever the saying is)/

EDIT: * as said above, I suppose I would have to for self-defence. Self-preservation > Everything else.

I think it's horrible.
Her friends are gazing on her,
And on her gaudy bier,
And weep!-oh! to dishonor
Dead beauty with a tear!
They loved her for her wealth-
And they hated her for her pride-
But she grew in feeble health,
And they love her-that she died.

Well I guess if you're killing it for sport/clothing and then selling the meat that's fine because you're using it all...but I don't agree with just shooting animals and leaving them there.

Any respectable hunter would not kill more than he or she can eat. Most hunter I've ever known respects his game and does not waste.

Those hunters who kill for killings sake should be ashamed.
There may be times when it is impossible to prevent injustice, but there should never be a time when we fail to protest it.

usually when a person kills an animal for sport alone, it is poaching, which is illegal. But mass killings of animals is wrong, even if the entire animal is used.

Always use everything you can from the animal, fur is part of the animal.

nothing else to say really,

huntings only cool if you're going to eat the meat, and atleast you know the animal had a good life upto that point, much better than farm animals atleast!

not gonna start on the "animals are living beings" bull$hit, we have been eating meat for millenniums, and it's one of the best food(for some). But, wearing a fur coat out of ...i don't know, 10 foxes, that's a cruelty, and IMO fur coats look hideous and gross

i'm against it for sport. however for those who live in climates where animal furs might be more appropriate (or more traditional), then i think it's ok sometimes. like native americans used all parts of the animal and nothing was wasted.... even if that culture is down the drain now.

hunting is fun. so is shooting guns. unless you've gone you really wont know how fun it really is. There aren't many people I know that go out and kill animals and then just leave them there. Almost all of them including myself Kill the animal, then eat it.
#23
That's silly. It's either wrong for both reasons, or it isn't wrong for either reason as far as I'm concerned.

but i don't agree with any other reason for killing animals. it isn't necessary for them to be killed for sport or clothing.

i mean if you are hunting them for sport, but you plan to eat them, I don't see a problem with that. but if you are hunting them just to get a trophy, then i disagree.
#25
As long as the animals have a healthy population, its irrelevant why people kill them.

Hunting is regulated by the Department of Wildlife, they "count" the animals, and determine how many can be harvested, which determines how many permits will be issued along with the bag limit and harvest limit.

As long as people consume the meat after the kill why they hunted the animal is irrelevant.

I don't believe in the word "wrong". And besides I'm in no position to say whether or not killing an animal for sport or fur is "wrong" when I myself eat meat most days, that would be extremely hypocritical, either way the animal is dead.

I disagree with killing anything for pleasure, if pleasure is the only thing derived from the killing. Like bull fighting. Hunting is a little different, for example, my uncle hunts a lot, but nothing is wasted. He has an enormous walk in freezer and him and my aunt never (literally never) pay for meat in a shop, they only eat what he or one of his friends has shot, they have fur rugs etc, but only from animals killed for meat. I must say the meat at his house tastes bloody good too.

I have absolutely nothing against killing animals for food, but for fun, or clothes, or ivory, or any other reason than to eat the animal is wrong. I don't object to say making clothes or a rug or something out of the pelt of an animal killed for food though, I see no reason why it should go to waste.

for food? yes. for fun? no. the fact that we kill animals for fun makes me not want to be human.

but for the record, i'm not a vegetarian and i'm not any kind of activist. but that's just how i feel.
Yeah, uh-huh...that's what they all say.
#30
I'm vegetarian but not from a moral point of view. I just really hate the thought of eating dead flesh. It worries and disgusts me somehow lol

But I don't have a problem with other people eating animals - and I wear leather. I don't see that wearing leather etc is a bad thing, it's a by-product of the animals being killed for meat anyway. Killing animals specifically for their skin/fur and nothing else seems wrong, however. OK, if you live in the Arctic Circle and need bearskin cloaks to survive, then go for it, lol. But mink stoles and dalmation trench coats are unnecessary and cruel, imo.

As for killing animals for sport...I don't think that it is right at all. If you need to cull an animal population to cultivate the environment, then fine. If you're going to eat the animals you kill, then fine. But just doing it for kicks isn't right.

But what about when a cow is killed, we eat its beef, and use its skin for leather clothing, is it wrong to use its skin for clothing in this sense too? Even though we are eating their meat?

Not in my opinion. It makes sense to me to use it - kind of a waste otherwise. I think it's wrong to kill animals JUST for their pelts, though, for purely fashion related reasons, as I said up there ^.

Okay, but at the same time.. whoever killed that animal is doing it to make a living. He then sells that pelt to somebody so he can provide for himself and his family. How's that any different than eating the meat?

Everything in moderation.

Hunting for sport or clothing is fine, it's just sad that in all these industries they're driving the species to extinction (for the most part; hunting deer is okay because they're running rampant). If there were an effective way to regulate the populations of these animals without removing them from their environment or intruding too much it would be great.

The way it's carried out today though is pretty bad in all industries.
#39
Well, they obviously meant human lives, because animals really arent going to change the world drastically. Animals kill for sport and food. They don't kill for fur because of lack of thumbs.
