Unfortunately some of the songs on there are the only extant listenable versions of songs.

Somebody posts something online and the legality of this is questioned
Youtube responds by muting said video to protect the copyrighted material

Not ridiculous at all. Annoying maybe, but not ridiculous.

Why would it be ridiculous? Has it occured to you that... gosh... maybe bands would like you to pay to listen to their music?

If you don't like it, Myspace.

Skillet are awesome.

BUT...

Not all band sites have audio on them for the same reason that the muting is happening on YouTube.

Myspace + search has returned results for every band I ever tried to look for, even bands that are long since disbanded.

For ****'s sakes, I DO pay for music when I buy the CDs and go to concerts but if I want to find new bands/obscure bands or look for new stuff, YouTube is the way forward.

Seeing as how it seems everyone is an idiot, this is what 'forfend' means:

–verb (used with object)
1. to defend, secure, or protect.
2. to fend off, avert, or prevent.

My. Fecking. Space. Bands actually approve of that, and agree to the material being put up there.

This really is quite retarded. Youtube has horrible sound quality compared to MP3s and i sincerely doubt that Youtube Vids are cutting into sales THAT much.

You put &fmt=18 on the end of youtube URLs and it plays it to you in the quality it was uploaded.

Yeah, and the most you'd find on a band's profile is 10 songs, which bearing in mind some of my fave bands have released 300+ songs, is pretty useless.

I saw a video with 25 views where the audio was muted

and if the band has it on myspace why isn't it allowed on youtube?

The band owns the rights to the music. Usually, when it's put up on Youtube it's by some person who doesn't own the rights, but just wants to listen to it.

EDIT: Also, am I the only one who has yet to find a muted video?

Then why doesn't YouTube just restrict who can post music videos?
#34
Its kinda over the top.
I mean, youtube is a site used for so many purposes- music being a main one, and to take that away is stupid.
Fair enough, money is an issue, but I highly doubt that Youtube is making a huge amount of difference. Of all the things to target, surely they could choose something more malicious like Mediafire or something?

Everything. The music industry is no longer all about buying CDs just to hear a song you MIGHT like anymore. Thanks to the beauty of the the internet, we no longer have to buy songs just to hear them. It's 2009 for Christ's sake. Musicians and their material are linked and easier to access more than they ever have been before. It's time to kill the traditional music industry. I understand the initiative of youtube and viacom and that copyright bullshit, but the point is we no longer should have to buy music just to hear it. That's officially a thing of the past. Got it? Good.

Anymore questions, kid-o?
