Hey

I noticed that when I play an ACDC song that is from the Bon Scott era it sounds like it is slightly out of key.

What I am saying is that when i play along with the music, it sounds as if one of the guitars is slightly out of tune.

I've checked the tuning for everything and it;s from the ACDC Family Jewels book so I know they are correct.

Is it something on my end or has anyone else noticed. The Brian Johnson ones are perfect though

Maybe you could try play along with it and see if you notice?

Cheers.

Who know's, this is a guess but the guitars MIGHT be tunned up the slightest bit up higher than E standard. I know For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica is like that.

Just again this is a guess.

Those songs are in Eb standard.

Yeah it sounds as if it were a quater way down. You have to really listen to it to wrok it out.

I've checked tons of times if I am. Checked the song tuning as well as my guitar tuning. I think I'm going to go have another check.

Cheers.

Not neccessarily. I ead in an intervew wit I think it was ngus that they deliberately wereslioghtly out of tune in long way to the top, partl fr the bagpipes relative tuing, an also beacuse many of the reatest rock songs, e.g. chuck berry stuff was not always inexact tune, but rather by ear or relative. Therefroe it is possible e is crrect, doesn't matter though cause CD kick ass anyway!

Back in those days, quite often a producer used to speed up or slow down the recording before final cut which alters pitch slightly.

Yeah it could be to do with old recording techniques.

Yeah, seems a bit random.
#12
as far as i know, it's because they didn't have electronic tuners or a keyboard, so they just did it by ear, and tuned everything to the instrument they thought was most in tune.

the bagpipe thing makes sense.

so they are in tune, it's just not concert pitch.

Same with Still Loving You by Scorpions; that's a quarter-step down, too. It's annoying as crap when you want to play along.

I heard it has something to do with the way they mastered tracks back in the day. John Frusciante's Away and Anywhere is like that too

i thought the only song they did a half step down is nightprowler?
cause in the biography it specifically mentions that they downtuned there guitars for a darker feel, and it seems pointless to mention this if they were always tuned a half step down

oh! QUARTER missed that part, i kinda skipped through, and assumed it cause it seems to be extremely popular in blues rock to tune a half step down

I think they also might have a slight alter in speed which has changed the pitch.

I might go play around with the tuning, try move it a quater down and up to see if i can get it sounding the same.

seems to me some metallica albums are tuned different aswel, try playing master then ride the lightning or fade to black seems out of tune. (I might be a crap tuner that might also be it .)

afaik ride the lightning was recorded tuned down and played slower so hetfield could hit the notes in key (vocals) and then sped up so it sounded like it was being played in standard tuning.

could be wrong though but i did hear it somewhere

you are NOT out of tune.

And seriously to all those that said you were out of tune:

tune up to A440 using a tuner and then try play along with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR6pxe8jaMs and see how you go.

For what ever reason, the tape speed being altered or tuning to suit another instrument or voice, the above song TNT is about a quarter step down.

This is way off topic, but holy shit.

You seriously looked at that before you hit 'Submit' and actually thought to yourself "Yeah, that looks pretty good."?
