Hi Everyone,

I wanted to learn guitar since I was maybe 14, but I never had the attention span to force myself to learn. I've finally learned enough on a cheap accoustic that I believe I enjoy guitar enough to purchase an electric, which is what I've always wanted to play.

To my limited knowledge, I understand that certain guitars are better at playing certain music. As I understand it, the Squire Star is more of a universal guitar, while the Ibenez is better for metal. I'm definately not a metal guy, but I don't know which I should buy.

I am looking for help in identifying which guitar would fit the music I want to play. To help you guys out, here is a list of all the songs that I've learned through tabs. hopefully this will be enough to figure out what I want.

New Order - Ceremony
New Order - Dreams Never End
The Cure - Lullaby
Joy Division - No Love Lost
Joy Division - Love will Tear us Apart
Heart - Love Alive
Golden Earring - Radar Love
Pink Floyd - Wish you Were here

Thanks in advance!

It's very much the amp that is specialised for Jazz, or metal, or country, but obviously the guitar is a big part too.

I'd say you go for some sort of "single coil" guitar, fender (or squire!) yamaha, ibanez...

the squire is the better option and should sound good with pink floyd songs you should match it with a decent amp though

Just to clarify one thing; Ibanez's aren't just metal-guitars. That's a common misunderstanding. Ibanez has great guitars for playing Jazz, Proggressive-stuff, and all other pop/rock-music. You just gotta know what to look for. Wich in your case is anything they've got without reversed necks and sharp bodys with EMG's.

A Stratocaster is pretty versatile and would probably fit you allright. Allthough Fender's stuff are really expensive, and you do pay alot for just the name. In Ibanez's case it's pretty much the opposite. You can get kickass-guitars for a reasonable price if you go for Ibanez.

But in the end, there's no way of saying wich guitar is best suited for you. Guitars are all about taste, and what you personally feel most comferatable with. You gotta get down to your nearest local store and try out everything they've got and simply go with the one that plays the best in your hands. Dont bother what brand or pickups or bridge it has got, or what guitar you idol plays, pick wichever guitar you preffer.

Great advice man!

Id suggest to get a decent amp and cheap guitar to start with, not completely crap gear, but something affordable. Go check out a pawn shop nearby too, or classified like craigslist or kijiji, you can get some pretty good used gear for cheap

Wish you the best of luck with your electric guitar playing dreams haha.

This is the new member forum to introduce yourself and ask about the running of the site. You will probably get a better response about what guitar to buy here and as for the amp try here.
