I'm becoming quite fascinated by the origins of theory. Anyone recommend a good website or a book to read on the subject?

This book won't be so solely about theory but about music itself, however Howard Goodall really knows his stuff so there should be a fair bit about how the application of theory has changed over the time and how music has developed.

I've not read it myself but I think I'll have to get myself a copy - he did a 4 part TV series called "How Music Works" a couple of years ago and that was downright brilliant, it's definitely worth trying to track it down.
Actually called Mark!

I got quite a bit just reading the introductions and forewords of classical text books. I haven't found anything exclusively about history though.
