Id go with a Schecter C-1 classic or 72 tele thinline/deluxe
Fender 72 Tele Thinline (my baby)
Gibson SG Special Faded
ESP LTD M-1000
Peavy Vk 112
Boss GT-10

What kind of amp do you have? I'd upgrade that first if you have a ****e one. Other than that, for punk and alternative gotta go with the Fender '72 Deluxe or a higher end Epi LP

Does it have to be from MF? For that much cash, I'd look for a used ESP standard series.

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/B.C.-Rich-Exotic-Classic-Mockingbird-Electric-Guitar?sku=512720

Looking past the haters, the B.C. Rich Mockingbirds are good guitars. I own many guitars, and although I generally only play my $1400 Carvin, I still look at my el cheapo B.C. Rich Mockingbird (Like $200) and think "man, was that a deal." Those guitars are also great because they are generally easy to set up because of the super simple bridge.

However, the Hellraiser C-1 is another great choice for a simply good guitar.

Being honest though, there are so many choices, you should do some serious investigating yourself to see what you want. If you don't have to spend that $1000 right now, don't. Wait until you see a guitar that you honestly want, and do not just limit yourself to that amount of money if you have good potential to earn more. There are many very special instruments in the 1k-2k range that you may want to look into if you have the capacity to acquire the funds. For example if you bought "http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Music-Man-Silhouette-Special-HSS-Tremolo-Electric-Guitar-with-White-Pickguard?sku=515558", you would be getting an absolute ton of guitar for the money, and it would be so versatile you wouldn't know what to do with yourself (However, it does have a trem.). Oh, and lastly, if you don't have to buy it at Musicians Friend, don't. You can get a 'lot of guitar' used and ofttimes fairly new on places like Craigslist and Ebay if you take care and read feedback.

That's not a bad choice.
