Than listen to non typical modern rock.

The Shins, Deathcab, Coldwar kids, etc.

Modern rock just isn't modern alt rock, (all of that sounds the same).

It lost the defiance of authority that made it cool in the first place. No one sings about sex, drugs, and being tough anymore. How badass is David Cook compared to GN'R?

Listen to Alter Bridge. You'll cum.

Tool, anyone?
Alter Bridge, maybe?
A bit of John Mayer?

rock has become commercialised, that's the problem. no sex, drugs and booze anymore. because that would make rock stars bad influences.

to quote bill hicks, "you know those musicians today who dont do drugs and in fact speak openly against drugs?

boy, they suck!"
^ Listen to the bands in that man's sig, or pick up Black Ice. I don't know about The Answer for they sound far better live. I know, alot of it sounds the same.
edit: Damn, late by far.

Whatever happened to stupid threadstarters who rant about inane and minuscule things?

Oh wait, they're right here.

...modes and scales are still useless.

But our Band is Listana
Music becomes different over time, and it just happens that this era of music sucks. Just go out to Borders and buy the Led Zeppelin 4-dic box set, some Beatles, Cream, and Rolling Stones, then you're set for life.

EDIT: There are some good bands still around but they're from like 10 years ago, so they knew what music was.
For example, Pearl Jam's pretty good. They're still making music that owns all the mainstream crap. Collective Soul is still making new music just like their first album.

I don't know, a lot of stuff from 20 years sounded the same me. But I get you, the music now can't compare to the 80's. GN'R > Hinder. But then again, Nickelback > Chris Brown or whoever it is now. Modern Alternative is hands down better than some other stuff.

I sympathise with the thread starter. But I just listen to mostly 70's/80's rock really; You probably start with AC/DC, led zeppelin etc. but as you dig deeper there's loads of others - planet rock is good for introducing you to bands you might not know of and things, although they're bad for playing the same songs over and over sometimes.

personally I blame the lack of keys player in modern hard rock bands - I love organ, piano, synth, etc. Plus, some of the sounds you can get from modern instruments would blow your mind - especially if like me you're a self-taught guitarist(bassist ) without that much exposure to modern keyboards etc.

Also I think "indy" and "post rock" or whatever - all that stuff - is the gayest thing goin'.
