I need help, and to get some advice from some serious luthiers.

ive made about 4 practice neck pockets, and none of them seem to get any better. What are some tricks to making a decent neck pocket so that its tight and no tone is lost. i know you can use a template, but i cant even make a decent template. so i just need some help

the thing on ebay works, but im making a neck pocket for a 7 string, the way im going about doing it is laying out the shape of the pocket, then lining up pieces of wood along the edges to have a straight edge, to work against. i do need to use the routerbit with a bearing on top though
