What do you want to change about the tone?

If it's anything like the Dist+ you can change the diodes and op-amp if you really want to.

Fair enough.

I think modding for the sake of modding is a little counter-productive.

My recommendation would be to build a simple fuzz circuit. That'll be mod-able to a larger degree, and you'll learn some new stuff along the way without possibly making a mistake on a fine working pedal.

Otherwise, give changing the clipping diodes a shot. Try some Germanium like 1n34a rather than the silicon diodes I think they use. Try assymetrical clipping (different diodes/combinations on each side). See what sounds you like.

I also recommend reading something like http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/ampovdrv.htm to get some background in how distortion circuits work.
